Spring 2015 Math 64 Intermediate Algebra Syllabus--section 3032
There is not a regular textbook for this class. Instead, you are required to watch and copy videos on YouTube created by me you, and complete written packets created by me. Packets may be purchased in the bookstore, or downloaded and printed. Each packet will be available as an attachment in the module at least a week before you need to complete pages in it.
ALWAYS BRING YOUR PACKET TO CLASS! Either download, print and put pages in order yourself, or purchase it in the bookstore.
ENROLLED STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND ALL CLASSES ON TIME AND ALSO ENROLL IN MYOPENMATH.COM (FREE and we call it MOM for short) AND COMPLETE FIRST ASSIGNMENT BEFORE THE SECOND DAY OF CLASS. NOT ATTENDING CLASS OR NOT COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENTS MEANS YOU MAY BE DROPPED. See directions below for how to enroll in MOM.
1. If you do not already have an account with MOM, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. For your last name, ENTER the SAME LAST NAME that is on SURF, or you'll be dropped from MOM. For your first name, feel free to enter the first name you prefer to be called.
Professor: Julie Harland; 760-757-2121 ext 6387; email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Tentative Office Hours: T/Th online 3:15-4:00 pm and Tuesday 12:45 pm - 1:15 pm in room SAN 304; and by appointment.
Facilitated Learning Session with Christina begins 3rd week of class: Every Thursday 12 - 1 pm in the Tutoring and Academic Support Office in the library. You earn 1 point extra credit for every session you attend.
If you email or call me, make sure to state your first and last name, which class you are in, and a phone number with times you may be reached EACH TIME. Come to office hours, see me after class, or email me if you have questions, or want to discuss something personal or related to math or about the class. IF YOU EMAIL me, I WILL USUALLY GET BACK TO YOU WITHIN 48 HOURS Monday-Thursday, and usually much quicker than that. If I don't get back to you within 48 hours M-Th, I didn't get the email. In that case, call or email me again. If I contact you asking a question, please respond within 24-48 hours. CHECK YOUR EMAIL REGULARLY in case I send out info or an attachment for your class, or a personal message to you! I AM HERE TO HELP YOU! Please feel free to ask questions. The main ingredient is for you to first put in the time, watch the videos, copy the problems on the videos, try the problems again on your own, and then do the pages assigned in the packet.
I AM HERE TO HELP YOU! Please feel free to ask questions. The main ingredient is for you to first put in the time, watch the videos, copy the problems on the videos, try the problems again on your own, and then do the pages assigned in the packet.
It is your responsibility to be respectful in class, to show up on time for each class, to stay for the entire class, to participate in class, to set aside and devote at least 12 hours a week to learning the material and doing HW on time for each class, and to keep up with and do your own work and studying. If you do that and put in the effort and have questions, feel free to ask for help! If you miss class, make sure you get notes from one or more students who were in class. I may forget everything I said or did or announced in class, so it's up to you to rely on more than one source for info. Please don't ask me if you missed anything as the answer will always be YES since of course you missed everything that went one while you were not there. Ask another student. I won't be able to reteach a whole class individually to you, but there are plenty of resources, including my videos and in the online materials, to help you learn what you missed. If you arrive late, leave early, or miss class, you cannot earn credit for any group activities. Please attend class! If you feel you don't need to attend class, consider taking the class online or learning on your own without being in a class for credit.
I expect honesty from my students. Anyone caught cheating will earn a zero on an assessment if cheating occurs. This includes helping someone else cheat. Please do your own work.
Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Calculator: You will need a scientific calculator for this class. The calculator should have buttons for square roots, exponents, and parentheses. Calculators may be used on tests, but most homework should be done without a calculator. Only use a calculator when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what is used in the Math Learning Center (MLC). Use of cell phones as calculators on tests is not allowed.
Attendance and Drop Policy: Attendance is required. Show up on time and stay for the entire duration of the class. Do not schedule appointments that conflict with class time. You may be dropped if you miss any class the first two weeks of class, or if you miss more than 2 classes during the course of the semester. You must also take each test in class when given, or you may be dropped. If you miss a class the first two weeks or miss a test, email me immediately if you do not want to be dropped. If you DO want to drop the class, make sure you take care of that yourself, and drop by the deadlines shown under Important Dates. Do not wait for me to drop you on time. That is your responsibility.
Late Passes for Online HW: You may redeem a late pass before or after if within one week of the due date to get a one week extension from the original due date. So if an assignment is due at 11:59 on 2/5/15, and you redeemed a late pass for that assignment, the late pass will expire at 11:59 pm on 2/12/15 at 11:59 pm. That means if you redeem a late pass on 2/12/15 at noon, it will still expire at 11:59 pm on that same day unless you use another late pass for that same assignment to extend it by another week to 2/19/15 at 11:59 pm. Make sure you understand you do not get a week extension from the time you clicked to redeem a pass, as that is NOT how it works. Any problem done correctly after the original due date only earns half credit for that problem.
Also, you may NOT use a Late Pass if you open up the assignment in your gradebook when it's in review mode after the original due date. So do not do that if you want to use a Late Pass on an assignment.I issue plenty of late passes so you can use them on any online HW assignment in MOM as long as you redeem it before the late pass period expires. You will see a "Redeem LatePass" link next to any assignment if it's within that period. Each late pass is only good for that HW assignment. The last date you may do online HW for credit is on 5/14/15. Late passes will be removed at that time. If you redeemed a late pass for an assignment before the due date ended, then you will not be in review mode until the late pass expires.
Homework: There are two types of HW. One is the online HW you complete in MyOpenMath. The other are HW Packets you do in conjunction with watching YourMathGal YouTube videos or using notes from class. You need to purchase or print out Homework Packets that align with videos I have made. The packet states which videos to watch before doing problems. All work must be shown in the packets.
Online HW: For the online HW, open up the HW assignment. Click on a problem on the left. Work the problem on your own paper. Write the answer in the answer box (or use the yellow bar that opens up the Math Quill which makes it easy to enter math expressions). Preview your answer to make sure it looks the way you want it to look. Then press SUBMIT. If it's correct you get credit. If you answer a HW problem incorrectly, you can click on "Try another similar question" and try again until you get the problem correct. Give yourself enough time to complete HW before the due so you have enough time to answer most, if not all, of the questions correctly. Problems may not be done after the due dates listed unless you redeem a late pass. Due Dates for Homework are in MOM. You should be working on HW and submitting problems throughout the week. The dates are final due dates to receive credit unless you use a late pass, and problems done on late pass only earn half credit.
Due Dates for HW: The HW packet is due and must be turned in before you take a test. You may turn in one packet during the semester up to one class after the test date without penalty. No more than one packet may be turned in late. Due dates for online HW that you must submit in MOM are listed in the online materials in the modules. Once a due date has passed, you can't earn credit on an assignment unless you redeem a late pass. Any problems done correctly after the due date earn half credit. Once the due date or late pass has expired, you can see the assignment in review mode, which means you can work the problems or work on similar problems but not earn credit. DO NOT OPEN THE ASSIGNMENT IN REVIEW MODE IF YOU WANT TO REDEEM A LATE PASS. See Late Pass Info.
TESTS: There are 3 paper/pencil Tests (all work must be shown on test) and a Final Exam. TESTS: Tests may not be taken after the due date, even for emergency situations. If you miss a test or your percent score on the last test is higher than the lowest percent score you earn on a test, your last test score (final exam) will replace the lowest score from Test 1-3. So if you miss one test, you earn a zero on it, but it will revert to the grade you earn on the final exam at the end of the semester. The final exam is mandatory and must be taken to earn credit in the class. If an emergency occurs when you are to take the final, contact me immediately. A test cannot replace the final exam. If you find an error after getting your test back, contact me.
Class Work: At the very beginning and very end of most classes, there may be some exercise or problems I assign to do during class individually or in a group. You must be in class at that time, participating and doing the work directed to earn credit. Each student needs to write any problems done during this time on their own paper with all steps shown. Name, date, and B for beginning or E for end of class needs to be at top of the paper. Keep all of pages in order by date in a notebook. This may be checked or collected any time during the semester. If you are not there for the activity, you need to get the problems from another classmate and include it in your notebook as there will also be credit awarded for keeping all of these throughout the semester.
Studying: Completing your homework is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule at least 12 hours a week (2-3 hours a day) for attending and/or working on this class. You may need more time. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older material to make sure you still remember the concepts and can work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category.
Homework Packets: 200 (2 times the percent earned on all packets)
Online HW: 100 (The points represent the overall percent earned on all HW from the semester.)
Participation/Group Work: 50 (The points represent half the overall percent earned in this category over the semester.)
Tests: 900 (There are 3 tests, each worth 300 points which is 3 times percent earned on each test.)
Final Exam: 400 (4 times percent earned on final exam)
Grades are calculated using the scale below. The minimum points you need to earn that grade is shown. You must do well on and tests (especially the final exam) to pass the class. HW helps a little, but your grade is based mainly on your ability to recall and be able to work problems correctly showing all steps and work in a testing environment.
1650 points possible. 1 point extra credit for each FLS you attend during the semester.
A: 1485 B: 1320 C: 1155 D: 990
