Elem Alg Syllabus Fall 2014 Math 30 Online

This class is HYBRID, not completely online, as it requires you to take proctored tests in person. Appointments are required, and should be made a few weeks in advance of the date you wish to take a test. Students may also be required to submit HW in person.

ENROLLED STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ENROLL IN MYOPENMATH.COM (FREE and we call it MOM for short) AND SUBMIT ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS ON OR BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS, OR MAY BE DROPPED. You may begin earlier than that. See directions below for how to enroll in MOM.

1. If you do not already have an account with MOM, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. For your last name, ENTER the SAME LAST NAME that is on SURF, or you'll be dropped from MOM. For your first name, feel free to enter the first name you prefer to be called.

2. Click Enroll in New Class and enter the course ID and enrollment key I sent in an email to enrolled students. If you did not receive the email, log in to Blackboard using your SURF ID to get the course ID and enrollment key you need to enroll in my class on MyOpenMath.

FALL 2014 Online Elementary Algebra Math 30 Syllabus--sections 1964 & 1977

There are 8 times this semester you will need to take proctored tests in the Academic Proctoring Center. There will be a range of dates/times you may take test. Appointments are required. Students need to make appointments at least a couple weeks in advance!

Office Hours: TT online 12-12:30 pm and TT 3-3:30 pm in room SAN 304; and by appointment.

Each time you email or call, make sure to state your first and last name, which class you are in, and a phone number with times you may be reached.

I am committed to having regular contact with you via weekly emails and announcements, and I will be monitoring your attendance and progress submitting online assignments and taking tests by the due dates. I encourage you to email or call me if you ever have any questions, or want to discuss something personal or related to math or about the class. IF YOU EMAIL or CALL ME asking questions, I WILL USUALLY GET BACK TO YOU WITHIN 24-48 HOURS DURING THE SCHOOL WEEK, and usually much quicker than that. If I don't get back to you within 48 hours M-F, I didn't get the email. In that case, call or email me again. If I contact you asking a question, please respond within 24-48 hours. CHECK YOUR EMAIL REGULARLY! Make sure you are receiving emails from me in your inbox, and that your email provider keeps my messages out of your spam folder! I usually send class announcements to your email, so if you are not getting regular emails from me, double-check all announcements.

Course Description: Designed to prepare students for intermediate algebra, this course teaches simplifying algebraic expressions involving polynomials and rational terms; factoring; solving linear equations; solving quadratic and rational equations using factoring; analyzing graphs of linear equations; and solving applied problems.

Calculator: You will need a scientific calculator for this class. The calculator should have buttons for square roots, exponents, and parentheses. Calculators may be used on proctored tests, but most homework should be done without a calculator. Only use a calculator when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what is used in the Math Learning Center (MLC). On proctored tests, you may only use the calculator they provide. Use of cell phones as calculators will not be allowed.

Attendance: Attendance is required by logging in to the online materials (MOM) and submitting assigned work on or before the due dates, and at least twice a week, and at least once every 72 hours Mon-Fri if you have assignments that need to be completed. You need to submit work on the first day of class, 8/18/14 and more often the first two weeks to show you want to remain in the class. After the first two weeks, EVEN if you are ahead, you need to log in at least once a week and submit at least one problem from a HW assignment to show you are attending class. You must also take tests by the due date, or you may be dropped. If you miss a test, email me immediately if you do not want to be dropped.

Due Dates: Due dates for anything submitted in MOM is listed in the online materials. Once a due date has passed, you can't earn credit on an assignment unless you redeemed a late pass and it hasn't expired. Once the due date or late pass has expired, you can see the assignment in review mode, which means you can work the problems or work on similar problems but not earn credit. See Late Pass Info below. You'll see the late pass button when you open an assignment if the due date hasn't passed. Make sure you look ahead for what is due in the coming week. Proctored tests are given in the Proctoring Center or at approved proctoring centers. Appointments are required, and should be made a few weeks before the deadline to take a test. See Proctoring Info.

Late Passes: I issue 8 late passes per student to use for any of the online HW assignments (about 35 total) in MOM. Unless you use all of them up, you will see a "Redeem LatePass" link next to any assignment that is not past due. If you are not sure you will be able to complete an assessment on time, you can redeem a LatePass for a 4 day (96 hours) extension on the due date. You cannot redeem a LatePass on a past-due assignment so it is completely up to you to manage your late passes carefully and redeem one before a due date if needed. Each late pass is good on only one assignment. If the extension is about the end, and you still need more time to finish an assignment, you can use another late pass to get more time. Check carefully for the due dates of all assignments. If you redeemed a late pass for an assignment before the due date ended, then you will not be in review mode until the late pass expires. So make sure you do all your work by the due date, or redeem a late pass before the due date ends.

Homework and YourMathGal videos: There are several online HW assignments inside each block, which is 2-4 weeks of work. Each block approximately covers material for a test. When you open up a Homework assessment, you will usually see a link to a pdf of written material and a list of YourMathGal YouTube videos I personally made to help you understand the concepts, and to provide examples showing all the steps. In lieu of attending class on campus, for each video I post when you open up HW, you are expected to watch, copy, and redo all problems shown on those videos (as well as pay attention to any definitions, rules, etc.) Problems similar to those on my posted videos may be in the online HW or on the written tests. Not all problems from the videos are in the online HW, but those problems are ones you still need to know how to do when you take the written tests. Once you start doing the homework problems, if you don't see the videos listed for that set, click on Show Instructions.

If you answer a HW problem incorrectly, you can click on "Try another similar question" and try again until you get the problem correct. Give yourself enough time to complete HW before the due so you have enough time to answer most, if not all, of the questions correctly. Problems may not be done after the due dates listed unless you redeem a late pass. Due Dates for Homework are in MOM. You should be working on HW and submitting problems throughout the week. The dates are final due dates to receive credit unless you use a late pass.

QUIZZES AND TESTS: Late passes are NOT allowed on quizzes or tests. There are 6 quizzes, which you must take online by the deadline shown in MOM. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester to allow for one emergency. There are 4 paper/pencil proctored tests that you must take in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC). Dates are listed in Test Info in MOM. All work must be shown on tests. A scientific calculator provided by the proctoring center is allowed on tests. Notes are not allowed on tests. Appointments for the tests and final are required. Tests may not be taken after the due date, even for emergency situations. If you miss taking a test for any reason or your percent score on the final exam is higher than your lowest test score percent, your final exam score will replace that score. The final exam is mandatory and must be taken to earn credit in the class. Nothing replaces the final exam. After paper/pencil tests are graded and recored, I will bring them to the Math Learning Center where you can pick yours up if you show a valid ID. Make sure you review it. If you find an error on any test, you need to contact me within a week of the due date (for online quizzes) or within a week of my returning them to the MLC for paper/pencil tests.

Studying: Doing your homework and studying are not the same thing. You have to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar. Schedule at least 12 hours a week (2-3 hours a day) for working on this class. You may need more time. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older material to make sure you still remember it.

Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 1100 points total. No extra credit.

HW: 100 pt (Points earned: overall percent earned on all HW.)

Tests: 600 pt (Points earned on each test: 2 times percent earned on each test.)

Quizzes: 100 pt (Based on average from 5 online quizzes.)

Final: 300 pt (Points earned is 3 times the percent earned on final exam.)

Grades are calculated using this point scale.

Student Learning Outcomes Math 30

1. Students will be able to make use of factoring techniques, solve quadratic equations by factoring, and make use of factoring to simplify rational expressions.
2. Students will be able to translate English phrases into algebraic expressions and equations, and solve applied problems.
3. Students will be able to perform operations related to linear equations in two variables, solve systems of linear equations, and solve applications which can be modeled using systems of linear equations.
