2/3/19 Math 64 Zoom Meeting Mon 2/4 at 1 pm
I'll be doing a Zoom Meeting where you can ask me questions. I can do examples and problems, etc., using a white board. It will be on Monday, 2/4, starting at 1 pm. See details and link below. If you can make it, great!
Remember that before midnight on Monday, you are required to make a post in the Week 2 Forum and also you are required to open and answer some questions in Q2. If you don't finish all of Q2 by Monday night, and want to work on the rest of the problems for half credit after the original due date, use a late pass. If you see a quiz in review mode, do not open it if you want to use a late pass.

2/4/19 IMPT INFO
Hi all,
There is a lot of important info in this message. Please read all of it and pay attention to the details.
1. I will be conducting a ZOOM meeting this Monday, 2/4/19 starting at 1 pm. Click here to join. I will be answering questions, helping with problems, etc.
2. TEST 1 INFO: Starting Feb 4 (after the APC opens), schedule an appointment to take Test 1 during the Test 1 Window Dates, 2/7-2/14. Appointments are required! If you do not make an appointment ASAP, you may not be able to get one at a time you can make. It is your responsibility to take care of this at least a week before you want to take a test. I can't help you if you put it off. Decide what day/date/time you want to take it and take care of this ASAP to get the appointment that works best with your schedule! Make sure you read all the info in Test Info so you are prepared for the test, and understand how grading works. Click Here to schedule an appointment through the APC website to take Test 1 covering all of Unit 1. You can call or email them if you need assistance. You may also schedule appointments for Test 2, Test 3, and/or Test 4 (final exam) at this time as well. See Dates for all tests in Test Info in MyOpenMath.
3. Monday, 2/4, is the due date to complete Q2 and to make a post in the Week 2 Forum on a problem from the Unit 1 Packet. If you don't finish Q2 by Monday night, use a late pass. Any problems done after 2/4 while using a late pass will earn half credit. If you see a quiz in review mode, do NOT click on it if you want to keep working on it for credit until you use a late pass.
4. We are starting Week 3, which is the last new material to learn for the first test. Watch/Transcribe videos for 1.8-1.10 in your video notebook, and complete those sections in Unit 1. Also complete 1.11 the review exercises. I suggest you also do the online Rev1-3: not part of grade and Test 1 Practice Test - not part of grade. Q3 and the Week 3 Forum post is due next Monday. There is no time to lag as 2/14/19 is the deadline to take Test 1. Then there is a holiday weekend!
Make a note of your Test 1 appointment, and remember to show up early to take it at your scheduled place/date/time. Feb. 7 is the first date possible for those of you who are ahead and want to take it early.
2/4/19 Test Appointments at APC
The Academic Proctor Center's online system crashed Monday morning, and they are working on it. I'll let you know if I hear when it's working properly again. For now, they are helping by phone until the system is up and running again. So feel free to contact them using the methods below to make an appointment. You may call or email them for help, to ask questions, or to make appointments throughout the semester even if the online system is up and running.
Students can call Oceanside at 760-795-6685 and San Elijo at 760-757-2121 Ext. 7752.
Students may also email the APC at proctoringcenter@miracosta.edu or come in in person to schedule their appointments.
2/4/18 Late Pass Change
Remember to complete some problems in Q2 before midnight. Then, if you need more time, use a late pass.
Originally, I stated there would be a 50% penalty for problems done correctly using a late pass after the original due date in the Calendar. I changed this to 30% penalty, so you can always earn at least 70% (grade of C) on a quiz if you complete it before the test while using a late pass! Read specifics below.
Do not open a Quiz in Review Mode if you want to earn more credit on a quiz after the due date! If you do not complete all problems on a Quiz by the due date, use a late pass. A Late Pass gives you a time extension to complete a quiz so you'll see a new due date, but there is a 30% penalty. So you will earn 70% credit on problems done on Quizzes 2-13 after the original due date. Note: This means you can still earn at least 70% on every quiz if you complete it before the test! The latest you may do problems after the due date using a late pass is on the date of the test covering that quiz. To allow you to get used to the system, there is no penalty for doing problems in Quiz 1 (Q1.1-1.4) after the original due date using a late pass. Each late pass extends the due date by 48 HOURS. You need to use a late pass for each extra 48 extension, and may use more than one late pass on each quiz if available. Problems done before the due date always earn full credit even if you clicked to use a late pass, and once you earn credit for a problem, you keep full credit even if you try a similar problem for more practice and answer it wrong! Only problems done after the original due date using a late pass earn less credit. Once a quiz is opened in Review mode, you may not use a late pass to earn more credit on that quiz. BE CAREFUL not to do that!
2/5/19 Overcoming Math Anxiety and Achieving Success Workshop

2/5/19 Forum Posts
Hi all,
Most of you are following the instructions for the class which is to watch/transcribe the videos for each section first, try the problems done on each video again to make sure you can do them on your own, and then do the problems in the packet, post to the weekly forum, and then complete the online Quiz. Thank you for doing that!
It appears that some students are not watching/transcribing the assigned videos for their own video notebook. That is a mistake as it's important to do that to learn/understand the material, and view examples to help you with your work. On the videos I show steps to many problems which is what I would be doing in the classroom if this class was on campus. Please do not skip this important step. If you practice on your own the problems on the videos, then you should have very little problem doing the problems in the packet, or on the online quiz. I want you to succeed, so please make sure you are putting in time necessary to do just that! You learn by working daily on this class, following the instructions, keeping up with the material, asking question, etc.
Week 3 forum is now open. Everyone should be logging in to read all of the forum posts. Those are part of the class discussion, and even more examples and problems are shown by your classmates in these forums. There have been questions in the forum over problems someone already posted the solution to. Please take note of all the wonderful examples already provided before asking the same question. If you have a question about a problem already posted, you can reply to that post for more help. Please log in throughout the week to check the forum posts. That, again, is part of the "being in a classroom with other students and learning from each other" part of this course. If you wait until the forum is almost closed to make a post, it's usually too late to get an answer or have a discussion. Please post before the day it closes.
2/6/19 Test 1 Appointments
If you haven't scheduled your appointment to take Test 1 (covering everything in the Unit 1 folder), please do it today. You may schedule it any day/time/location from this Thursday, 2/7, to next Thursday, 2/14, where an appointment is available. You may go to the website, which is up and running now, call them, or email them. CLICK HERE for APC WEBSITE which has link to schedule an APPT, hours of operation, etc.
If you have question or would like to schedule your tests by phone, call Oceanside at 760-795-6685 or San Elijo at 760-757-2121 Ext. 7752.
Students may also email the APC at proctoringcenter@miracosta.edu or come in person to schedule their appointments.
Not scheduling your test well in advance of the date you want to take it may mean you cannot get an appointment that works for you. Not taking a test for any reason, including an emergency or not being able to get an appointment, results in a zero on that test. Same day appointments and same day appointment changes are not allowed.
Open this folder in MyOpenMath for all info: TEST Info: Instructions, Appt Info, Policies, etc.
If you have not completed Quiz 2, use a Late Pass and finish it ASAP! There isn't time to lag behind, as you should be working on the this week's material. Please make your post in the Week 3 Forum soon so I have time to respond to any of your questions.
2/6/19 Math 64 Zoom Meetings
Are you interested in participating in Math 64 Zoom Meetings this Spring?
During these meetings, I use an electronic whiteboard to answer questions, work through problems, etc. It's like a virtual office hour if you can't make it to my regular office on campus.
Please go to the following link, put in your first name and last initial, and click what days/times of the week you might like to participate in a Zoom meeting. If you haven't tried Zoom, it's easy. These are not the real dates. I'm trying to find what day of week and times of day most students would like to meet online for a Zoom meeting. I may have it on different days each week, based on input.

2/12/19 Read Forum Posts and Replies
It's extremely important to log in and read all of the forum posts and replies. I reply to most of the, often clarifying information, make corrections, give hints, etc. For instance, some people are confused about how to isolate the absolute value in equations or inequalities, and how to proceed from there. If you or someone makes a mistake, you have the opportunity to learn from those so you don't make the same mistake on a quiz or test. This is the "coming to class" part of this course, and skipping it may mean the difference between passing or not. Please take the time to pay attention to my notes and comments.
Below is a little summary for solving equations and inequalities with absolute values.
A common mistake is how to write the solution to an absolute value equation that has exactly 2 solutions.
For example, if you solve |x + 3|=10, the 2 solutions are 7 and -13. On an online quiz or test, simply list the solutions separated by commas like this: 7, -13
In the packet, you can write these in braces: {7, -13}
Some students are writing the solution like this: (-13, 7). This is wrong. If you use parentheses like this, it includes all the numbers between -13 and 7, and not -13 or 7. Use parentheses for interval notation when it's less than or greater than problems with infinitely many solutions. The other time we use parentheses is when we mean an ordered pair, (x,y). In that case, (-13, 7) is a point on the x-y axis.
If the problem was |x + 3| < 10, we would solve after first writing -10 < x + 3 < 10 to get -13 < x < 7. The answer to this is the interval, (-13, 7).
If the problem was |x + 3| > 10, we would solve after first writing x+ 3 < -10 or x + 3 > 10 to get x < -13 or x > 7.
The answer in interval notation to |x + 3| > 10 is this: (-oo, -13) U (7, oo)
|x + 3|=10, |x + 3| < 10, and |x + 3| > 10 are all different problems, and none have the same solution. Study the differences. These are reviewed on page 100-101 of the Unit 1 packet. You need to know the difference, and also need to practice checking your solutions.
The Week 3 Forum is due this Wednesday. Please make any new posts by today so there is time for a reply!

If you would like to take part in a ZOOM meeting this week, let me know the day/time you prefer and I'll send out info. I'm posting past ZOOM meeting info in MyOpenMath, so you may view/listen at your convenience.
If you did not do well on Test 1, consider doing this: Set aside 2-3 hours every day to work on math. After watching/transcribing a video with examples/solutions, write each problem on your own paper and try without looking to show your work. If you do not get it correct, watch the video or copy it correctly from your notes once more, and then try it again on your own until you can do every problem from the video all on your own. I also suggest putting every problem from a video on an index card, with the solution on opposite side. These are examples you can try throughout the week to make sure you remember how to work through them, and will be useful to do out of order when studying for a test. You can write the section it's from on the index card. It's a good idea to make index cards for all the problems in the packet as well. It's constant review where you can do a problem all on your own without looking that will make a difference. The more practice doing them correctly, the better you'll understand the problem and be able to do it on the test. By the end of the semester, you'll have tons of problems to randomly practice from the index cards which will help you when studying for the final.

There is a lot of info in this announcement. Please read through to the bottom.
If you have not completed Q4, make sure you use a late pass. I will be out of town Fri-Sun, so may not be able to respond to any questions until next Monday. If you have questions, please post them in the forum by 7 pm today if you want to make sure I have time to make a response before Monday.
Quiz 5 and the 5th forum post is due Monday. Check out recordings of some of the Zoom meetings that have taken place lately if you'd like to see more problems worked out. See the link when you log in.
You should also always redo every problem on the videos by yourself after transcribing each one to make sure you can do each of those on your own. Doing the packet problems is also very important. Any problem with an asterisk by a number indicates that exact problem is done on one of the assigned videos for that section. When you do the problems on the quiz, I also suggest you try similar problems even after you get the problem correct to make sure you can keep getting similar problems correct. The more practice you do, the more likely you will have a better understanding of the problem and be able to do well on the next test. Some students need more practice than others, so do each type of problem as many times as you need to do it until it seems easy for you, and you easily get it correct. You can open any quiz in review mode for more practice.
The dates you may take Test 2 are 3/14, 3/15, 3/16, 3/25, 3/26, 3/27, 3/28. You may take it before or after Spring Break. Please schedule your appointment ASAP if you haven't done that yet.
