Concepts and Structures of Elementary Mathematics I
Meets T/Th 2:00 - 4:20 pm; Oceanside room 7004
Guide-on-the-side (Instructor): Julie Harland
Email: mccmathgal@gmail.com
Office Hours: T/Th 1-1:50 pm in 3622; and by appointment. Each time you email or call, sign your email with your first AND last name, write that you are in Math 105, and provide a phone number with times you may be reached. TURN PHONES OFF (or on silence) AND PUT AWAY DURING CLASS. If your phone rings during a test or if you use your phone in any way, you must submit your test, leave the classroom, and will not be allowed to continue and finish it.
Required Text and Materials to bring to class: Understanding Elementary Mathematics, Modules 1-9, and Material Cards. To each class, bring your paper manipulatives in baggies (cut from Material Cards), pencils, erasers, pens, calculator, highlighters, and any module due or to work on in class.
GRADING: Your grade is based out of how many points you earn out of a possible 2600 points as stated below. Grades are assigned as follows:
2340 or more: A 2080-2339: B 1820-2079: C 1500-1819: D 0-1499: F
2000 pt: 5 Tests and Final Exam (400 pt each—each 4 times percent earned on that test; lowest score dropped)
100 pt: Mod 9 Test (same day as final exam)
400 pt: Other Graded Work: (4 times percent earned in this category)
100 pt: Service Learning (SL) Project or Alternative Assignment
You must do reasonably well on tests to earn a C in the course since they are worth most points. See separate handout about SL project.
NOTE: A student with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please see me, email me, or call me within the first two weeks of class if you need any accommodations. Contact the Disabled Students Program and Services immediately and follow their policies and deadlines to receive accommodations.
TEST INFO: Dates are announced in class, or listed on a schedule. Bring pencils, erasers, and a calculator (phones not allowed) to each test. A test takes up part of the period. You will also be working on new material on test days. If you need to take a test early, discuss with me at least a week ahead of time. Tests may not be taken late. Your lowest test is dropped, so if you miss one test, that zero will be the one that is dropped.
Other Graded Work: There will be other graded work throughout the semester. Written HW consists of showing work to all problems in handouts or modules. After class, complete whatever you did not finish in class before the next class session. Consistently review, study and work to understand the concepts. If you do not have 9-12 hours per week to devote to this class, consider taking it when you have more time. HW should be complete before you come to the next class, and you must Show Steps. Check answers in back of module to make sure you did the problems correctly, and redo any you missed. Most class days, there will be a homework check at the beginning of class, and you must be in class with your homework ready to be checked to earn credit. You need to have ALL of the HW done as I only check a few random pages or problems, and those must be completed. There may also be pop quizzes on any material covered so far in the class, and these may be done any time during the class period, often at end of the class. These cannot be taken early or late. You must be in class AT the time to get credit for homework checks or quizzes. You will also need to keep a Tidbits notebook that will be checked or collected. Every student will also have to make a short presentation to the class, and also discuss service learning. More details about these and other graded work will be discussed in class.
If you need help understanding something, be sure to get help before the due date and test day: work with classmates, seek help in the Math Learning Center, come to office hours, email me, look at examples, watch videos, etc.
Usual Class Format and Attendance/Participation: If a class is canceled, you still must complete work scheduled for that class before the next class meeting. Most of our class time is spent working together in small or large groups. Be on time, be prepared, participate fully, and stay for duration of class. Arriving late or leaving early is disruptive. If you miss a class the first 2 weeks, or miss 3 classes throughout the semester, you may be dropped unless you contact me immediately. Be at every class on time and participate for the entire class meeting. You are responsible for ANY announcements made in class, and for anything covered in class. PLEASE TREAT THIS CLASS LIKE A JOB: CALL OR EMAIL ME EVERY TIME YOU ARE ABSENT AND TO INFORM ME OF ANY EMERGENCIES.
To promote an ideal learning environment, I ask students to be respectful and considerate of others in class, and to maintain a Positive Attitude. I’m happy to discuss questions about how the class is run, your grade, your philosophy, etc., OUTSIDE of class. Class time is math time. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated. Speak with me privately if you have concerns. Refrain from talking to others while I’m talking to the whole class, even if you are helping someone. Extra noise is distracting. Arrive on time, and stay for the entire class, unless there is an emergency.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
