Concepts and Structures of Elementary Mathematics I
Meets MW 4:00-6:20 pm; Oceanside room 3608
Guide-on-the-side (Instructor): Julie Harland
Email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Office Hours: Office Hours: MW 1-1:30 pm and 6:20-6:50 pm online (I will probably be in 3622 during this time); and by appointment. Contact me ahead of time if you want to meet me in my office. Each time you email or call, sign your email with your first and last name, and a phone number with times you may be reached. TURN PHONES OFF (or on silence) AND PUT AWAY DURING CLASS. If your phone rings during a test or if you use your phone in any way, you must submit your test, leave the classroom, and will not be allowed to continue and finish it.
Required Text and Materials to bring to class: Understanding Elementary Mathematics, Modules 1-9, and Material Cards. To each class, bring your paper manipulatives in baggies (cut from Material Cards), pencils, erasers, pens, calculator, highlighters, and any module due or to work on in class.
GRADING: Your grade is based out of how many points you earn out of a possible 3600 points as stated below. Grades are assigned as follows:
3240-3600: A 2880-3239: B 2520-2879: C 2160-2519: D 0-2159: F
3000 pt: 5 Tests and Final Exam (600 pt each—each 6 times percent earned on that test; lowest score dropped)
100 pt: Mod 9 Test (same day as final exam)
300 pt: Assignments/Homework/Quizzes (3 times percent earned in this category)
100 pt: Participation (Points deducted for absences, being late, leaving early, taking long breaks, not participating, etc.)
100 pt: Service Learning (SL) Project or Alternative Assignment
You must do reasonably well on tests to earn a C in the course since they are worth most of points. See separate handout about SL project.
NOTE: A student with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please see me, email me, or call me within the first two weeks of class if you need any accommodations. Contact the Disabled Students Program and Services immediately and follow their policies and deadlines to receive accommodations.
TEST INFO: Dates are announced in class, or listed on a schedule. Bring pencils, erasers, and a calculator (phones not allowed) to each test. A test takes up part of the period. You will also be working on new material on test days. If you need to take one early, discuss with me a week ahead of time. Your lowest test is dropped.
Assignments/Homework/Quizzes: Written HW consists of showing work to all problems in handouts or modules. After class, complete whatever you did not finish in class. Consistently review, study and work to understand the concepts. If you do not have 9-12 hours per week to devote to this class, consider taking it when you have more time. HW should be complete before you come to the next class. You must Show All Steps. Check answers and redo any problems if you do incorrectly. At the end of most modules are Review Exercises. Modules must be organized with pages in order, and stapled, or bound in a FLAT folder. Do not submit in a binder. WRITE NAME IN LARGE LETTERS ON FRONT. For full credit, each module must be complete and turned in at the beginning of class on the due date unless accompanied by a late HW voucher. To allow for emergencies, you receive two late HW vouchers. I accept late HW up to one class after the due date for half credit unless a late HW voucher is attached. Modules must be handed to me on time in class, unless given to my secretary or put in drop slot or box in 3600 building before class. Your homework score is based on completion, showing work, and being turned in on time. If every problem is done with work shown, is correct, AND the module is turned in on time, you will earn the full points. There will also be HW checks and pop quizzes on any material during class for points. These will not be checked or taken early or made up. You must be in class AT the time checks or quizzes are done/given.
If you need help understanding something, be sure to get help before the due date and test day: work with classmates, seek help in the Math Learning Center, come to office hours, email me, look at examples, etc.
Usual Class Format and Attendance/Participation: Everyone starts with 100 points for Participation, and points are deducted if you are late, leave early, miss a class, take a long break, or do not participate fully in each class. If a class is canceled, you still must complete work scheduled for that class before the next class meeting. Most of class time is spent working together. Be on time, be prepared, participate fully, and stay for duration of class. Arriving late or leaving early is disruptive. If you miss a class the first 2 weeks, or 3 classes over the semester, you may be dropped. Be at every class on time and participate for the entire class meeting. You are responsible for ANY announcements made in class, and for anything covered in class. PLEASE TREAT THIS CLASS LIKE A JOB: CALL OR EMAIL ME EVERY TIME YOU ARE ABSENT AND TO INFORM ME OF ANY EMERGENCIES.
To promote an ideal learning environment, I ask students to be respectful and considerate of others in class, and to maintain a Positive Attitude. I’m happy to discuss questions about how the class is run, your grade, your philosophy, etc., OUTSIDE of class. Class time is math time. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated. Speak with me privately if you have concerns. Refrain from talking to others while I’m talking to the whole class, even if you are helping someone. Extra noise is distracting. Arrive on time, and stay for the entire class, unless there is an emergency.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
