Madagascar is a beautiful, diverse country with many tourists coming through each year. Often, we have thoughtful clients who ask us about how to be good visitors. Here are some tips to help you stay responsible tourists!
Be considerate when taking photos:
- Observe - Is the scene a religious ceremony such as a funeral? Is the area considered sacred?
- Ask - Identify a person in authority (religious leader, village head, parent, etc.) and ask politely.
- Offer - It doesn't always have to be money. Have a small conversation, share a joke, connect with people before taking something from them. Don't promise to send a copy of the photo unless you really mean it
- Respect - If they say no, honor their wishes. (Consider how you'd feel if a stranger took photos of your family or at your event without your permission.)
Respect the polite Malagasy culture and traditions:
- Malagasy people are generally very friendly and curious about other people and cultures. We are open to hearing new ideas and thoughts, but we want you to respect ours, too.
- Note body language - especially if there is a language barrier, a smile can go a long way!
Plastic Water Bottles
- Reduce - Try to bring reusable bottles. You can boil your own water, or get boiled water at restaurants and hotels.
- Reuse - If you must purchase bottled water, the empty bottles can be used by villagers to collect and store their own water, so save your empty bottles.
- Recycle - Most villages have no waste program, so be courteous and pack out your waste until you reach a large city.
Don't encourage begging (especially by children)
- Try changing the subject and starting a conversation.
- Donate to a reputable charity or school instead.
- By giving money, candy, or other items, you are encouraging the recipient to continue begging and the expectation that other tourists will give them gifts.
Conserve Energy Use
- Turn lights and AC off when you leave your hotel room.
- Avoid excessive hot water use.
Protect the environment
- Stay on marked trails and/or follow your guide's lead.
- Do not remove plants or minerals from their natural environment.
- Remember to carry out any waste.
