(2015) I-L38 in Eastern Europe

by Mikhail Arzamanov

In Eastern Europe haplogroup I-L38 is presented much more modestly than in Western Germany or on the British Isles. Available public East European samples conditionally can be divided into 3 groups :

  1. Representatives of an East European branch, characterized by SNP L69.

  2. A small Tatar-Bashkir cluster, located in the Volga-Ural region.

  3. Single haplotypes that do not form a geographically determined cluster. These samples often have a direct connection to resettlement of Germans in the Middle Ages and Modern times to Eastern Europe.

The geographical distribution of the subclade L69 shows a good correlation with the dispersal of Slavs. Besides TMRCA for the L69 linaege makes approx. 1500 years ago that corresponds well with the beginning of the territorial expansion of Slavic tribes in the 6th century.
