This wood is from the Thuya tree (Tetraclinis articulata in Latin). This biblical tree is a conifer from the cedar family, and is exclusively native to Morocco. Grown exclusively in the Middle Atlas Mountains, Thuya has been revered since Roman times for its gorgeous burled grain and splendid aroma. It was often used in religious ceremonies. It is the first burled wood selected for the dashboard consoles of Rolls-Royce cars. The fact that the trees grow only in Morocco's climate- and nowhere else in the world has lent the wood an air of exclusivity which has heightened global demand.
This rare conifer tree is harvested not by its trunk or branches but from the actual roots and new growth. They are around 70 years old before they are cut. Even today, oil is extracted and is used in aromatherapy.
