Slope Soaring

I find flying model airplanes not only great fun but therapeutic. The concentration  needed to keep the plane in the air helps me forget any worries I may have been dealing with in the week.

My Father was the reason I got into this hobby back in 2005, when he decided he would like to re-kindle an interest he had in the past. He felt that this would be something the both of us could do together. My Father was on his own, in his nineties and I was keen to spend some quality time with him while I had the opportunity  to do so.

Unfortunately he was only able to practice this hobby with me for a short while, as soon he found it difficult to walk from where we parked the car to the hillside. However I had got the bug and continued to fly when I could.

My Father and I would have to find another interest we could share, that would not be so energetic for him.  This turned out to be Astronomy..find out more.

Above right - is me with my first aeroplane..The SAS WILDTHING 60. Practically indestructible as it is made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) and reinforcing packaging tape. This is an ideal plane to learn to fly for the first time as you can be sure, you will have many crash landings as you get the hang of it.

Mugi... This aeroplane is made by folding 2mm Coroplast. I found the Plans on the WEB by chance.

The V-tail Swallow...a sleek fast and acrobatic aeroplane. I obtained this second hand from a local model shop in Trowbridge.

The WINDSTAR, a two channel glider built by my late Father.

Multiplex Easy Glider and Aerial Photography

The Multiplex Easy Glider is RTF (Ready to Fly) model made from expanded polystyrene and needing very little assembly before you can get it in to the air. It is another very stable and easy to to fly airplane that is good to gain that all important flying experience.

It will fly in light winds and cope well in stronger winds with the addition of a steel strengthening bar inserted in the tube running through the wing.

With this I decided to have a go at taking aerial photographs of the White Horse hill side by attaching a small camera to the nose.

A home made interface was made to connect to a spare channel on the receiver, with a lead soldered to the trigger contact on the camera.
