Billiard Room Restoration

In 2020 we started restoration of the Billiard Room.

The room had accumulated a lot of old furniture over the years but once it was removed, along with several large shelving units (constructed when it was used as a grounds maintenance store) it revealed the large fire surround, original staircase and parquet floor.

What we thought was going to be a fireplace restoration turned out to be the complete removal of the fireback and all the surrounding brickwork. The water saturated bricks and mortar crumbled away to reveal the rear wall and side 'cheeks' (thanks for the description Mike!) The front hearth was cracked and was removed straight away but it revealed the water damage to the bottom of the wooden mantel and the surrounding parquet flooring - a real shame but the result of decades of non-use.

Unfortunately we also discovered that one of the alcove window lintels was rotten - a combination of damp and woodworm, and after discovering that we then also found that the only thing holding together the surrounding woodwork was the paint!
