I'm a phonetician and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at School of Psychology and Humanities, the University of Lancashire. I'm a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK.
I study how people use language, speech and visual cues to communicate, bringing together linguistics, experimental psychology and communication research. My main focus is prosody — the melody, rhythm and timing of speech, often described as "tone of voice".
My current projects explore how body movements and prosody work together in Jejuan, an endangered language spoken on Jeju Island in South Korea; how prosody varies across dialects; and how hearing loss relates to prosody and the way people take turns in conversation. I also investigate prosody in birdsong.
I combine experiments with human participants and detailed analysis of speech and video recordings, using close observation and statistical modelling to uncover patterns in communication. This interdisciplinary work has applications in hearing care, language teaching, communication strategies, the study of animal sounds and language technology.
I welcome collaborations exploring how speech, gestures and other visual cues work together in communication, and how communication changes as we age.
