The Walking Group's activities were suspended during COVID and there are no present plans to re-establish the group.
The group traditionally met every second Monday morning, alternating with the fortnightly meetings of the Club and continuing fortnightly over the summer. The most common starting point was the Aubigny Centre, but on occasion the bus or cars were used to reach a suitable starting point. Plans for the upcoming walks were circulated by email. Each walk lasted for about two hours and covered 4-5 miles.
A selection of past walks
Binning Wood & Newbyth
Binning Wood East Car park. Walk round wood anticlockwise to second car park. Cross the road turning right. Turn left up private road to Newbyth. Pass the converted stables on the left. Bear left and pass through a deer gate to Newbyth Wood. After passing a small pond continue round the grassy paths back to the road. turn right along the road (or through the wood) and back to the original car park. A level walk on firm paths or tarmac, 3.3 miles (gps reading) - about 90 minutes.
Haddington to Westfield Bridge & return
Aubigny Centre – Riverside (west) – White Bridge – Field path - Burns Memorial – Field Bridge (Gifford Water) – Begbie Road – Westfield Bridge – Ford Road – Clerkington Estate - Pencaitland Road – Riverside (east) – Aubigny Centre. Mostly level hard paths, occasionally muddy; some tarmac. A steady walk of 4.2 miles (gps reading), taking about 1h 50 m.
Tyninghame circular
Assemble at the car park at Tyninghame Links. Note that there is a £2 car parking charge, so £ coins will be needed. The walk goes from the car park east through Little Binning Wood and continues to the River Tyne at Mosshouse Point. There are good views of Tyninghame House and the Tyne Estuary from here. We then turn back west around the salt marsh and back along the coast (or through Links Wood if the tide is up) to the viewpoint at St Baldred’s Cradle and then back along the coastal path and through Links Wood to the car park. The walk (4.5 miles) is relatively flat on estate paths or dirt tracks through woodland or on grass near the coast and should take about 2 hours.
Humbie Wood and Kirk
Leave Haddington on the B6368 via Bolton towards Lauder. In approx 10 miles at the crossroads just after the sign for Humbie, take the narrow road on the right signposted Humbie Church. Park on the left when you reach the sign indicating Upper Car Park. The walk starts here. Follow the road down past the Kirk and the doocot turned into a house to reach the renovated bridge beside the information board and the entrance to Humbie Wood. The signposted walk in the wood is some 2.5 km but is quite challenging in places. Mainly flat, it also includes a couple of steep sections (both up and down) and the crossing of two burns. In places the path can be wet and muddy, so boots are recommended. With a group, the walk is likely to take about 90 minutes. After the walk, the popular Hub back in the village provides a welcome lunch or cup of coffee.
East Linton - Pencraig - Over Hailes - River Tyne
Start at the East Linton Mart where there is plenty of parking. Then, Pencraig Brae (slowly!) - Pencraig Wood - Over Hailes - River Tyne walk (east) - East Linton - Mart. Coffee at Mart if required! Excellent views north over the Forth from Pencraig Hill, then various wildlife features along the River Tyne. Mainly tarmac and footpaths. The latter can be muddy along the Tyne after rain. About 1h 45m at a steady pace.
