Haase Family Wisconsin
Introduction
Welcome, I am Wayne Haase, one of many of the Haases that reside in the southeast corner of the State of Wisconsin in this wonderful country of the United States of America. I'm related to the first Haase in Wisconsin, in this specific line through Raymond, son of Frank, son of Martin, son of Liborius Haase. Liborius traveled to the U.S. on board the ship "Texas" in early 1854 from the German port of Bremen. He and his family emigrated from the town of Kreuzebra, Thuringen, Germany to New Coeln in the Town of Lake in Milwaukee county, Wisconsin. New Coeln, town center, used to be just west of the present day General Mitchell International Airport located on Howell Avenue between Layton and College Avenues. More information is available on the page "FROM HEUTHEN TO AMERICA" by Dr. Alfons Grunenberg (who graciously supplied me with all the information from the churches in Huethen and Kruezebra, Thuringen, Germany including a transcript of Laborius and Dorothea's marriage certificate. )
A few years ago one of my grandsons requested of me, a family tree, if one was available, for his school assignment. At the time I was aware of some genealogy work that had been done by two of my aunts, one on my maternal side, Rose Ann Korol nee Posnanski, and one on my paternal side, by Sister Bernice Helen Haase. I felt that someone should consolidate the two, and in this digital age, make them available to the family. The fact that I do not excel at delegating tasks to others, left me with but one option, and here is my feeble attempt to show the paternal side. There is a combined paternal and maternal site by the name of Poznanski Family Wisconsin.
As with most families there are four grandparents, and the U.S. being a country of immigrants most of our ancestors originated ultimately, from somewhere else. What I found, that I thought interesting ,was that our forbearers, Liborius Haase, Joseph Bartol, John Barczak and Jacob Poznanski came from the same general 19th century region (Prussia) and in the latter 3, the same area in the same country. These branches of the family arrived in the Wisconsin area from the "old country", it is believed, in 1854 for Liborius Haase. Joseph Bartol from Boruszyn, Posen, Poland, in 1891, Jacob Poznanski from Potarzyca, Poland in 1892 and John Barczak from Rozalin or Dabroszyn, Slupca, Poland in 1906. The last three seemed to all originate from the same general area within a 50 mile radius of Poznan, Poland.
Why they all came to Wisconsin, and why they felt they needed to leave their homeland is speculation, but is attempted to be explained on the "Emigration page" authored by by Helmut Schmahl, Johannes Gutenberg , contained within this site.
The various spelling of our families names was curious to me. It seems that most of the family's names, both given and surnames, have been altered. Some on purpose, others by accident. Some of the Poznanski descendants name is now spelled Posnanski because of a misspelled birth certificate. Josef was changed to Joseph. Barczak name was changed some time between the first years of being in the U.S. From Bartczak. The names Haase and Bartol seem to be consistent in the U.S. But there are many variations in the old country. Haase in the space of a hundred years in one family went from Haze in Denmark, to Hase, to Haas, to Haase, in Germany, though, at this time, I am unable to prove that this specific family is directly related. The Haase spelling in our family line changed between 1662 and 1717 from Hase. Hase is the German word for the animal "hare". Haase is an old Germanic writing form for Hase. Dorothea's (wife of Liborius) maiden name Diegmann, changed to Digman in the U.S. (see Valentin below)
Also included on this site are some of the pictures I have been able to digitize, 4 of which are on the right (the rest are on the "Family pictures" page). Additional photos are available from me through my email waynehaase6@yahoo.com. The top photo is Liborius & Dorothea (Diegmann) Haase's youngest son and daughter in law, Martin and Bernadina Haase, the second is Martha Haase (Frank) nee Bartol, their daughter in law, The third photo is Martha and Frank's 5 sons, left to right are Daniel, Ralph, Harold, Raymond, and Russell. The fourth is the gravestone of Dorothea's cousin in Keiler, Wisconsin. Also included in this site are family trees, as inclusive as the information that is available as of the spring of 2017.
Was Liborius the first ancestor in Wisconsin? The answer is, I don't think so. Isaack Frederick (see "Haase and Frederick History") is listed in the 1850 Town of Lake census he was the maternal grandfather of Frank. There was a Haase that obtained Land Patent in Wisconsin in the 1840s. On 2/10/1848 a Charles Haase signed a Land Patent for property in or around the town of Belgium in Ozaukee County, contingent on the sale of another property. Valentin Johann Digmann (cousin of Dorothea Haase nee Diegmann b1822 ...common grandfather Urban) was born on March 8, 1806 in Heuthen, Eichsfeld Thuringia. He was married and had two children, Anton b.December 10, 1833-d.July 13, 1916 and Maria b.August 15, 1835-d.June 13, 1878. His first wife died. Valentin was remarried to Margaret Anna Aureden on November 16, 1846 in St. Nicholas Church in Heuthen, Eichsfeld, Thuringia, Germany. Their first two children were born in Germany. They are Christina b. November 24, 1847 and Herman J. b. March 31, 1849.
Valentin, Margaret, Anton, Maria, Christina and Herman immigrated to the US on the "Philamena", a German sailing-vessel landing in New York City in May 1852 after being on the ocean seven weeks and one day. from Valentin's obituary Keiler, Grant county, WI I have Valentin arriving on the "Wilhelmine" on 25 July 1850 per "Castle Gardens" web site, but that could have been a preparatory trip. It is believed that Valentin was the inspiration for Liborius and Dorothea's traveling to Wisconsin.
