Gurbachan Singh is an independent economist. He was previously visiting professor at the Department of Economics, Ashoka University. 

His forthcoming book is on Macroeconomics and Asset Prices - Thinking Afresh on Basic Principles and Policy. This includes a new interest rate policy that is BEST - Better-targeted, Effective, Small-sized and Transparent compared to the prevailing interest rate policy. The innovation in the work has far reaching implications in theory and in practice. 

He was earlier visiting the Economics and Planning Unit (EPU) at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi Centre. Before that he was at the Centre for International Trade and Development (CITD), School of International Studies (SIS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).  He has also been guest faculty at Mnagement Development Institute (MDI), Gurugram. 

His academic writings in journals are primarily on macro-financial stability. This is at the interface between financial economics (including behavioural finance), macroeconomics, central banking, public economics, and real estate economics. The work is in theory to explain the real world and to devise a simpler and better policy framework. 

He received his PhD in Financial Economics from ISI (Delhi Centre), MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, and BA(H) in Economics from Hindu College, University of Delhi. 

It is important to convey research findings to a larger audience. In this context, he has contributed substantially to Business Standard and Ideas for India.
