Agricultural Supply Chains, Growth and Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. Market Structure, Farm Constraints and Grass-root Institutions (with N. Depetris Chauvin and F. Mulangu)

We study the interplay between market structure and domestic complementary factors in the production and consumption decisions of agricultural families in Africa. We analyse the changes in real income of households caused by price changes of cash and food crops in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Uganda and Madagascar. We also evaluate the role of non-market institutions in the context of the constraints found in our African case studies. The book was published by Springer in July 2017.

Services, Trade, and Development (with M. Mashayekhi and M. Olarreaga)

We study the role of services, trade and trade in services as a vehicle for development and poverty reduction. The project includes 12 chapters and it was published by UNCTAD in 2011.

We study the role of imperfect competition along the supply chain of African agricultural exports in fostering developing and in reducing poverty. The project includes 12 case studies: the cotton sector in Zambia, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin; the coffee sector in Uganda, Rwanda, and Côte d’Ivoire, the tobacco sector in Malawi and Zambia, and the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. This is a World Bank-CEPR publication, 2011.
