I am a Professor in the Department of English Language Education at Seoul National University, South Korea. My scholarly interests include second language acquisition, World Englishes and English language education, language policy and curriculum, internet-assisted language learning and teaching, and the development of L2 reading and writing in the Korean context.
My recent work has focused particularly on L2 literacy development and assessment. I am especially interested in how L2 reading skills emerge and develop over time, how fluency and written linguistic knowledge contribute to reading comprehension, and how major theoretical frameworks such as the Simple View of Reading can be more appropriately interpreted in L2 research. I also examine issues related to large-scale literacy assessment, including the construct validity and educational implications of the English section of the Korean CSAT and Korean reading tests.
My graduate seminars reflect these research interests. In recent semesters, they have focused primarily on L2 literacy development, with particular emphasis on fluency, the Simple View of Reading, the role of written linguistic knowledge in L2 reading, and longitudinal models of L2 reading development.
