I began writing in 1998, after I went to my first concert. It was the night before my first day of college, and I got home so late that I decided not to sleep. Instead I sat at my computer and typed an email to a girl about the show. Four-thousand words.
Over the next couple of years I often wrote long emails about concerts and albums.
Eventually, during my second year of college, I began writing little blurbs about albums for Indiana University's student radio station, WIUS (now WIUX). The guy who were running the station read my blurbs and asked me if I'd write hip-hop reviews for their 'zine.
At that time I didnt know what a 'zine was, but I was thrilled to be asked to write anything at all for anyone. So I wrote some reviews and eventually someone at the student newspaper, the now-defunct Indiana Daily Student (IDS), hit me up about writing album reviews. Nothing could have been more exciting.
And so I wrote a few albums reviews for the IDS and continued writing epic emails to music friends.
After college, while managing a record store, I decided to try to make writing my thing. I had no idea what I was doing but seeing my name in print was thrilling. So I started sending out album reviews to newspapers and websites. Sometimes I would send poems or short stories to 'zines. Sometimes I would make my own 'zines.
From 2003 - 2014 I took writing very seriously, and grew to eventually make a living from it. All I did was write and read and listen to music and watch films. And, of course, edit other people's writing.
During that period of time I had more than 3,000 albums reviews, 200 feature stories, and 1,200 columns published in a wide variety or newspapers, websites, local arts papers, and 'zines.
In 2004 I started trying to write novels and screenplays. I was awful at both but I kept working and working and eventually got very into writing screenplays. To date I have written nine feature-length screenplays and twelve short films. Several of these scripts have been produced.
Below you'll find a mix of interviews, album reviews, columns and feature stories.
