  Rise Up and Build - Building Up the Body of Christ

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” 

-Ephesians 4:11-16

In the Old Testament we read about Nehemiah.  After seeing the crumbling walls of Jerusalem, he called the people to “Rise up and build." Nehemiah doesn't do it alone. He inspires the people, sharing his vision. And the response of the people? "Let us rise up and build."

This story and the words of Nehemiah (2:19) call us today, not just to building and rebuilding with bricks and mortar, but also to a deeper, spiritual building – the rebuilding and renewal of our faith. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to respond to God's gifts with faithful stewardship. Like Nehemiah, we are called to "rise up and build," carrying on God’s work in our parish our community and in the world.

This call of Nehemiah to "rise up and build" invites us to become active members of the Church, the Body of Christ, to join in ministry and contribute according to our abilities. As Orthodox Christians, we understand that stewardship is a joint effort of all the members of the community. Every member has a role to play.

What is Christian Stewardship? 

Christian Stewardship is…

• Learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work, for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God.

• Our active commitment to use all our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgment of Christ’s redeeming love.

• Caring for the needs of others.

• Offering one’s self to God as He offered Himself to us.

• What a person does after saying “I believe…” as proof of that belief.

• Devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as diocese/metropolis, as national Church and as Church universal.

The continuation of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre is dependent on the will of our parishioners.  The stewardship program provides parishioners with the opportunity to support the church according to each person's specific circumstances and financial status.  Thank you in advance for all your support of the continued operations of the parish.

The 2026 Stewardship Form is attached below.  By filling out the stewardship form, the church's files containing your information will be updated.  After completing the stewardship form, please give it to a member of the parish council or mail it to the church.
