North Graue's Woods originally hosted Salt Creek, before its relocation (possibly in the 1930s with the construction of Route 83) to the west side of 83. The neighborhood is in a low-lying, high water table, clay soil area with limited drainage and detention. ALL our streets have grading and runoff issues.
The city tracks flooding reports to allocate resources and funding. Please report street flooding or basement backups by calling the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050, or better yet fill out this form:
Extreme precipitation events are on the rise, and May 2020 was the wettest May ever.
The NOAA gov. website defines "extreme precipitation" as any single day with more than two inches of rain. Sunday was 3.11 inches, last Friday early morning was 2.6 inches. Prior to the 90s, it was a rare occurrence.
Looking at the Illinois 2016 chart, the trend is clearly up long term. In the near future, major portions of the state will probably have to plan for 3-5 days of flooding every year. The good old days were much drier.
