Living in Ontario: Land and Resource Use

We will be learning about some human activities that have had an impact on our own environment in Ontario.  When people make decisions about how land is going to be used it can change the natural environment. The change made can have both positive and negative consequences.

For example, a city might decide to build a new rec center in the middle of old farm land. This will create new jobs for people in the community to build and to run the rec center. The rec center will provide the community with a place  to gather and exercise which is healthy.  This is positive for the community.

It will also mean that there will be more traffic in the area which will cause more air pollution. The farm land might have been home to some animals and plants.  The animals and plants will have to look for new homes. This is negative for the natural environment.

Can you think of some ways that we use land in our city? Make a list of the different types of structures that people have made for use in our community.
