The John Samsa, Fred Zangaro, and Harry Quinn Memorial Scholarship

Greater Pittsburgh Football Officials Association (GPFOA) established the John Samsa, Fred Zangaro, and Harry Quinn Memorial Scholarship to honor our three former officials who were integral leaders of our organization. These three men exhibited a strong sense of pride, teamwork, and sportsmanship on the field and in their daily lives. Their exhibition of these skills are ones that every member of the football, cheerleading, and band programs exhibit with their teammates, and classmates, every day.

The Memorial Scholarship has provided over $54,000 to local students and is funded by our annual golf outing. Students from schools that provide GPFOA with their football schedule are eligible to apply for the scholarship as a thank you for entrusting GPFOA to officiate their games. Past honorees have attended Carlynton, North Catholic, East Allegheny, Mars, Montour, Pine-Richland, Plum, and many more.

To be eligible for the Memorial Scholarship, a student must be a graduating senior and have participated in the football program at any level, including, but not limited to, a football player, cheerleader, band member, student manager, or student athletic trainer.

The 2024 John Samsa, Fred Zangaro, and Harry Quinn Memorial Scholarship is open to graduating Seniors from the following school districts:
