York Anglo-German Society (YAGS) 2020 - 2021

All meetings are cancelled until further notice because of the corona virus. We hope to start again in September. In the meantime, we are linking up with the Leeds Area Anglo-German Societies. Please contact the Acting Secretary below.

About YAGS

We now meet monthly on the 1st Wednesday of the month, unless otherwise stated, at the Bar Convent, Blossom Street, York from 19.30 until about 20.45 / 21.00.

Membership

Members pay £30 for the year (for 2019 - 2020 only, membership is reduced to £15). Visitors may attend at a cost of £3.00 per meeting.

What happens at the meetings?

The programme is varied and topical, and covers every aspect of Germany and its culture, history and politics. The talks are usually in English in order to attract a wider audience, and are given by scholars who are experts in their field. Some speakers come as part of the German embassy speaker programme. Often, if the speaker is coming from a distance, he/she will be invited for a meal, sometimes at Del Rio's Restaurant opposite the Bar Convent, and YAGS members are welcome to join in if they wish before attending the evening talk.

Talks have included regular updates on "Germany Today" from Werner Sabiers, a German journalist who has been working and living in the UK for many years, a talk about Heinrich Schliemann, the German archaeologist and excavator of Troy and other places mentioned in the works of Homer, given by Mark Green, Honorary German Consul from Leeds, listening to Prof Harald Husemann talking about his family's experiences living under Hitler and in the GDR, listening to the songs of Marlene Dietrich, and watching films. There is, of course, plenty of time for Q&A.
