Gerbils on the Quay

About us
Our decision to get gerbils came after our dog, of 14 years, passed away. We decided we wanted a pet that was less demanding, didn't urinate in or smell up our house, and didn't need a babysitter if we were gone for a weekend. The kids earned their rights to getting a pet and chose gerbils. We decided to look into a breeder because we had gone to two different pet stores and one had a dead gerbil in the cage and the other wasn't selling any at the time because of an epidemic that was going around. I had gone to a breeder for our dog and for parakeets as a child. I was told if I wanted to teach a parakeet to talk they had to be 6-8 weeks out of the nest. They were right, and I enjoyed hearing my little parakeet talk to me, after much training. So, it made sense to me to go to a breeder for gerbils as well. They seem to be healthier and you can get them at a younger age so you can tame them easier and own them longer. We purchased two male gerbils--Nibbles and Smoky-- and the kids fell in love with them.
When Nibbles passed away, we didn't want Smoky to remain alone for too long, so we decided it would be fun to purchase a male and female, breed them, then keep two male babies to stay with Smoky and remain together after Smoky dies. We enjoyed breeding them so much (I bred my dog in 1997, which was a good experience too) and have found enough people interested in adopting them, that we decided to continue with our breeding adventure. That was in September of 2011.
My husband had gerbils when he was younger, but he did not have the knowledge or information we have today, so all of his gerbils died. He is getting to "fix" that part of his childhood by learning the ins and outs of gerbil care and breeding healthy gerbils. We really enjoy giving great pets to great pet owners.
