Members of the Kwon lab are broadly interested in geochemical and microbial processes controlling the transformation and mobility of metals, radionuclides and organic contaminants both in engineered and natural environments. In particular, we have investigated the relationships among microorganisms, carbon, iron and sulfur biogeochemical cycling, which have critical implications for the remediation of metal, radionuclide and/or organic compound contaminated environments and for the development of microbial extraction technologies of critical metals from geological material including rock, soil, sediment, and water. Success in such research for environmental sciences requires broad multidisciplinary knowledge and the application of multiple analytical tools that requires cross-disciplinary collaboration. We have worked with researchers in many fields including geologists, physicists, chemists, microbiologists, and engineers,  and performed experiments with their collaboration.
