Members of the Kwon Lab are broadly interested in geochemical and microbial processes controlling carbon cycling and the transformation, mobility, and bioavailability of metals, radionuclides, and organic contaminants in natural and engineered environments. In particular, we investigate microbially mediated carbon–iron–sulfur redox cycling in subsurface, soil, wetland, and permafrost environments. Our research has important implications for understanding greenhouse gas dynamics and climate change, assessing the long-term safety of deep geological repositories, remediating contaminated environments, and developing soil-based carbon sequestration strategies.
Addressing these complex environmental questions requires multidisciplinary knowledge and the integration of geochemical, mineralogical, microbiological, and molecular analytical approaches. We therefore collaborate closely with geologists, physicists, chemists, microbiologists, environmental scientists, and engineers.
