(a) The Advanced Research WRF (ARW) model step by step procedures can be downloaded from here. This manual is prepared for wrf arw run on ubuntu os. The only problem you face is when you start installing WRFV3 in that it complains about : ld library missing. There was a fix for that you have to add -lgomp at the end of -lnetcdf in the configuration.wrf file after running configure. That is a simple fix.
(b) Importing custom geophysical fields to use in WRF/geogrid. A C code is modified that you can use to convert your geophysical fields to a binary file based on WRF WPS reading code.
