Gavin Ryan Shafron, Ph.D is a NY State Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Professor, Speaker, Consultant, and Addiction Specialist. Dr. Shafron received his B.A from the University of California, Los Angeles, Personality and Cognitive Psychology training at Stanford University, his M.A. in Clinical Psychology & Psychology in Education from Columbia University, and Ph.D at the APA accredited doctoral program of the California School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco (CSPP). Thereafter, Dr. Shafron completed his predoctoral internship and Post-Doctoral experience at the APA accredited program of the Counseling Center of Baruch College, City University of New York.
Clinically, Dr. Shafron holds specialties in the treatment of anxiety and depression, relationship stress, psychotherapy/coaching for high achievers + creatives, personality disorder diagnosis and treatment, and, the integration of Cognitive Behavioral and Psychodynamic Theory and therapy.
Academically, Dr. Shafron has served on the faculty of various community colleges and 4 year universities in the San Francisco Bay area, New York City and Los Angeles. Clinically, Dr. Shafron has previously held the roles of psychoeducational group facilitator through CSPP's Psychological Services Center in Oakland, CA., and held clinical roles at the psychotherapy training program of the Alliance Health Project: Services for the LGBTQ+ communities at the University of California, San Francisco, and the college counseling center training program of Santa Rosa Junior College Student Psychological Services. Dr. Shafron's research has been published in numerous peer reviewed academic journals on topics ranging from psychological ethics and child and media psychology, to musical preference and psychomusicology. As a self-described "metalhead," Dr. Shafron is especially interested in what drives listening and musical preference for hard rock and heavy metal music along with how media interacts with emotion.
Administratively, Dr. Shafron served as a staff psychotherapist and substance abuse specialist at Baruch College, founding the college's first Substance Abuse Prevention Program and administering the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) College Environmental Prevention Grant. Dr. Shafron currently serves on the faculty of Los Angeles Valley College and Los Angeles Pierce College within the LA Community College District and as a NYS Licensed Psychologist through Clarity Therapy NYC. Dr. Shafron serves as a speaker and consultant through Shafron Psychological Services, working with university administrations and on legal teams to help his consultees apply psychological research to make their work more effective.
