Gary Stewart Thoms
I'm a linguist at NYU
I am an Assistant Professor at New York University, working primarily on theoretical syntax. Previously I was a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Scots Syntax Atlas (SCOSYA) project at the University of Glasgow (2015-2018; I'm still involved in the project), and before that I had positions at Newcastle University (2014-2015), the University of Edinburgh (2011-2014) and the University of Strathclyde (2010-2011).
I work a variety of topics in syntactic theory, such as ellipsis, reconstruction and scope, relative clauses, Celtic syntax and Scots dialect syntax, and I also do work in the area of literary linguistics, including the syntax of poetry and generative metrics. My papers and handouts from this work can be downloaded on the "Papers etc" page; comments/queries are always welcome.
Outside of work, I also do a spot of DJing, co-running a club night in Glasgow called OSMIUM. We have a somewhat neglected tumblr blog here and a more well-used facebook page here. We have a bunch of mixes up on Mixcloud (here, here and here) which may give you an indication of what to expect, although the best way to find out is to come Nice n Sleazys for a dance! [I don't really get to DJ anymore cos life and that but I'm leaving this here to remind myself of what once was, and on the off-chance that some linguist or other might click on the mixcloud links. ]
Look, here's my wonderful dog:
