A portion of the biography of Dr. Isaac Henry Gardiner; Written 1898, History of Baltimore Maryland[1]
Mr. Isaac Gardiner, grandfather of Doctor Gardiner, emigrated from Scotland[2] when a young man.[3] He was a near relative of the Earl of Lovejoy of Western Ireland.[4] In his early youth he was betrothed to a young lady selected by this parents.[5] After reaching manhood, the engagement having become distasteful to him he broke it off with her. He had previously formed an attachment for Martha Leak,[6] and with her eloped to America, locating in Baltimore. He was one of seven brothers, all of whom but one came to America and settled in Baltimore.[7] Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner's children are as follows: James,[8] deceased, Isaac,[9] father of our subject, and Catherine,[10] deceased.

[1] This article is the best source we have for the earliest origins of our family. In many aspects the census, directories, and other documents corroborate it. In some aspects it appears to confuse facts. The aim of this annotation is to sort out what is corroborated from that which appears to be mistaken.
[2] Most of the Gardiner immigrants of this family reported Ireland rather than Scotland as their place of birth to the various census takers that came to Baltimore in the 1800s. Some indicate Scotland. There are many good theories to explain why Scotland is used in this obituary. First, it could very well have been the last port of departure from which some of the brothers did in fact emigrate. Second, the Gardiners were perhaps part of the ethnicity called the “Scotch-Irish”—residents of Ireland who emigrated there from Scotland. Third, during this era being an Irish immigrant was synonymous with being a drunken Catholic. Scottish immigrants were far more acceptable to WASP American natives than Irish. Further evidence proves that the brothers indeed emigrated from Donegal Ireland.
[3] The actual date of Isaac’s migration is uncertain. His death occurred in Baltimore in 1832. The first time he is listed in the Baltimore City Directory is 1829 (he was a “carter” living at 5 French St.). He is not listed in the 1822 or 1827 Baltimore Directories. There is, however, in the St. Paul Episcopal Church records a christening record dated July 6, 1825 listing the birth of Isaac Gardner; parents: Isaac & Martha Gardner. The first time that any of his brothers shows up in Baltimore documentation is 1822, when brothers Francis and John are listed in the Baltimore City Directory. Another clue is that the 1850 census lists the birth of John Thomas Gardiner (son of John Gardiner) as 1823 “at sea.” The likely date of Isaac’s immigration is probably some time between 1820-1825.
[4] There never was such noble as the “Earl of Lovejoy.” There was, however, nobility called “Mountjoy” in Western Ireland that was held by Luke Gardiner in 1789. Luke Gardiner is also the name of the progenitor of a large Gardiner family that migrated to St. Mary’s Maryland in the 1600s. This earlier family included a number of Isaac Gardiners and Francis Gardiners—names common to both clans.
[5] The practice of arranged marriage was most prevalent among nobles. This may be some corroboration that these Gardiners were kin to Baron Mountjoy.
[6] The only person in Baltimore City during the first part of the 1800s with the surname of Leek is Nicholas Leek from London. Of note is that this Nicholas Leek was a schoolmaster in Fells Point with or near a woman named Martha Willis Gardner, also a schoolmaster. Nicholas Leek appears to be a grandson of the 4th Earl of Scarsdale. The motif of disgruntled nobles fleeing to America together is alluring.
[7] In the 1820s Isaac Gardiner and five other Gardiner men are listed in the directory as living on French St. The other five brothers are Francis, James, Joseph, John, and Thomas. The name of the seventh brother who did not migrate has not been determined. There was also a Jeremiah Gardner on French St. in 1822.
[8] James was born in 1827 and died in 1884 in Washington D.C. His son, Samuel Lewis Gardiner was the great-great grandfather of Dr. Richard Gardiner, author of this annotation.
[9] Isaac was born in 1825. He was a sailmaker. His son, Isaac Henry Gardiner is the person about whom this obituary was written. His daughter, Julia, married Marvin Anderson, the grandfather of Marvin H. Anderson who at the present (2010) has been a great resource for family information.
[10] Catherine married John Jones, a sailmaker, and had two daughters: Sarah and Mary. She later married Capt. J. Henry Holmes. Her tombstone mentions her father, Isaac, and has a tribute to Francis.
