Q. What day or days are the best to have a sale?
A. The best time is if your neighborhood has a sale. Highland has it every year in the Spring. This saves you money advertising and gets you the most buyers in the area. More buyers equals selling more of your good stuf. If you do not have a neighborhood sale, I would have a two day sale on Friday and Saturday. For a single day sale, Saturday is the best day. Do not hold a sale longer than two days. You will always be the busiest the first half of the first day. Holding a sale on Saturday means buyers that work will have a chance to attend. Some people have a Thursday or a Thursday and Friday Sale. You will not have as many buyers if you went with Saturday or Friday and Saturday.
Q. I have read that you should not price items since a buyer might love an item you hate and offer a higher price than you would have put on the item. Should I price my items?
A. Most buyers will not ask a price if they do not see one. If an item that you are not sure what to ask, you can put a sign with "Best Offer". This way you can take a buyers name, phone, and price. At the end of the sale the high bid gets the item. Only use this on a few high priced items, all others should be clearly marked with a price.
Q. Can I make money by buying items that I will then sell at my Garage Sale for a profit?
A. I would not recommend it. Many Garage Sale buyers are looking to pay 50% of retail for items that are new and as low as 10% for used or outdated items. Your main reason for holding a sale should be to reduce clutter. A Garage Sale is not a Retail Store. Use eBay or Craigslist to sell new high priced items. Most people would make more money by donating and taking the tax credit than what they will get from a sale.
Q. Should I act like a Sales Clerk in a store at my sale?
A. No, Garage Sale buyers do not want or expect the retail sales experience. Do not be pushy, you will make more money if you sit back. Be prepared to answer buyer questions if they have any.
