David Schmeidler joined Tel Aviv University in 1971, and was active until his very last day.
His contributions to game theory and decision theory are numerous and in diverse areas, and they had a tremendous impact on the two subjects. He suggested the nucleolus, which is a solution concept to coalitional games based on equity as well as feasibility considerations. He pioneered the study of nonatomic strategic-form games. He was the first to suggest an axiomatically-based decision theoretic model that deviates from Bayesian decision making. And together with his student, Itzhak Gilboa, he developed the maxmin expected utility and case-based decision theory.
David authored more than 80 papers, which were cited more than 20,000 times.
David had five students: Itzhak Gilboa, Peter Wakker, Jiguang Fang, Shiri Alon-Eron, and Xiangyu Qu.
We will all miss him.
