We have a full court style Javanese Gamelan and play traditional Indonesian, contemporary American music and more!

Due to the closing of Goddard College Gamelan Sulukala has moved! Bethany Church in Montpelier, VT is our new home - a beautiful room on the second floor now houses the instruments and the Sanctuary will be the prime venue for future performances! Stay tuned for more information and an all-new website - coming soon!

Gamelan Sulukala is pleased to announce a public performance of music and dance at the Goddard College Haybarn Theater in Plainfield on Saturday, June 3 at 7:00 pm.

This concert will feature a wide variety of music ranging from traditional Javanese pieces - both slow and fast and with vocals, to more contemporary compositions. In addition, for this concert we are very excited to include special guest dancers on several pieces. Please come to this rare and exciting event, help us spread the word, and bring your family and friends.

Our performance on June 26, 2022 outside at the Plainfield Rec Field was hot, hot, hot! And well attended (thank you!) and a lot of fun. We did a "repeat" performance inside on October 2, 2022. (See above)

Gamelan Sūlukāla, a community gamelan group, has been playing together for the past 6 years using Goddard College’s beautiful Javanese Court Gamelan instruments. Their latest project will be a performance of their own soundtrack to “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”. The film, made in Germany by Lotte Reiniger in 1926, was the first ever feature-length animated film and is based on two tales from the Arabian Nights. The cutout silhouette animation technique used by Reiniger is similar to that of Indonesian shadow plays, which are typically accompanied by gamelan, so the idea of rescoring ‘Prince Achmed’ was a natural one. The gamelan score uses traditional Indonesian and 20th century American pieces for gamelan and creates a magical feeling that greatly enhances the exquisite animation.
