I am so grateful that I grew up in the vibrant and diverse city of Oakland. It has helped shaped my views on diversity in education and given me some tools and knowledge in how best to serve communities like the one where I grew up. In the summer of 2016 I returned home to teach in one such community by becoming a part of the Aim High family. Aim High is a Bay Area nonprofit organization that provides free academic summer programs to middle school students from low-income families. Since my first summer there I have returned every year to serve communities in Oakland and San Francisco. Now I teach at UC Riverside, a majority-minority and Hispanic-serving institution, and I again feel at home here.
