As your instructor, I am a guide and facilitator learning along side you.
Course Goals
Through participation in this course, you will:
Extend your understanding of literacy as mastery of discourse and disciplinary practices
Articulate to students the interrelatedness of the disciplines, creating multiple pathways to the subject matter.
Select the most effective teaching techniques to address a variety of student learning levels, rates, styles and needs as well as diverse interests and backgrounds.
Identify theoretical constructs that help adolescents use reading and writing to learn in content areas and discipline literacy.
Participate as members of a professional learning community.
Demonstrate curiosity and continual commitment in refining and developing knowledge base within your discipline
Zoom conference sessions are scheduled during the semester for students to meet with me and one another to discuss content and/or ask questions or seek clarification about assignments.
We honor your funds of knowledge that you bring to our course.
Course focuses on Four Phases culminating up to your independent inquiry project (also known as Passion Project):
Phase I –Tapping Prior Knowledge & Schemas
Phase II –Professional Conversations& Development
Phase III –Professional Readings
Phase IV –Independent Inquiry/Passion Project
Your learning is for you, guided by your interests, motivation, curiosity and passions.
In addition to accessing your course work on UNM Learn, you will also be creating a blog and website to house your intellectual property created during the semester. In this way, you own your work and it is not trapped within UNM Learn after our course ends! It is hoped that your learning impetus continues beyond this course and you will use your websites and blogs as teaching and learning professionals.
