Multiple Intelligences

Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardner argued that IQ tests only test linguistic and mathematical or logical abilities and are, therefore, not sufficient in explaining the wide range and different types of cognitive and other types of ability. His theory of multiple intelligence argues against the concept of a general intelligence. Instead, Gardner proposes eight different abilities that can be regarded as showing different types of intelligence.

These are:

  • Logical-mathematical (good at reasoning, numbers, mathematical calculations)
  • Verbal-linguistic (ability to speak and write well - facility with languages)
  • Visual-spatial intelligence (visualising objects in a three-dimensional space)
  • Bodily-kinesthetic (ability to control bodily movement)
  • Musical (ability to compose music / play a musical instrument)
  • Interpersonal intelligence (understanding the intentions and motivations of others)
  • Intrapersonal intelligence (understanding our own feelings and motivations)

Opponents of this theory claim that there is little empirical evidence to prove the existence of multiple intelligences.
