NRA FIRST Steps Rifle Orientation (4 hrs)
FIRST Steps (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training) is the National Rifle Association’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for beginning shooters or new gun purchasers. This 4 hour course is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a rifle orientation for new purchasers. This program is designed for the new shooter that uses the Total Participant Involvement (TPI) training methodology. It stresses active training and learning by doing. The course will provide shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific rifle model safely. Students will learn rifle safety rules, parts, and operation. The five fundamentals of rifle shooting aiming, breath control, hold control, trigger control and follow through, how to determine their dominant eye, rifle shooting from the bench rest position, cartridge malfunctions, range safety and shooting facility orientation. Rifle cleaning, storage and training opportunities.
Prerequisites: None
Equipment Required:
Rifle – Must be in good working order, not modified from factory specs.
Bring owners manual.
50 rounds of ammunition (Commercially manufactured ONLY!- No Reloads)
(Rifle and ammunition can be provided for nominal fee)
Eye and Ear Protection (can be provided)
Range Time: 1-2 hours (Rain or shine)

Course Goal: The goal of this training class is to provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary in owning and using a specific model of rifle safely. Classes are limited to no more than four students, generally with each student using a different model or type of firearm. With this format, each student not only gets a fundamental understanding of their particular model of firearm, but also a general understanding of how other models of firearms operate.
