Paris 8 University and Université Sorbonne Nouvelle are pleased to announce that the workshop/symposium Methods and Tools in L2 Phonology-Phonetics Interactions will take place in Paris at the SFL lab (CNRS & Paris 8), on September 4 and 5, 2025.
This workshop is organized by a research group whose main field is the acquisition of phonetics and phonology in foreign and second languages (L2). This thematic group was set up within the GIS RéAL2 (Réseau en Acquisition de Langues Secondes: https://real.cnrs.fr/gt-phonologie) in 2023, with the aim of creating synergies between various researchers in L2 phonetics/phonology in France and abroad.
The workshop will feature three experts in the field of L2 phonology acquisition:
Pilar Prieto, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain)
Christoph Gabriel, Johanes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany)
Sharon Peperkamp, CNRS & Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique (France)
It will also include 3 practical methodological workshops on different topics:
Florence Baills, Universidad de Lleida (Spain), multimodality and L2 phonology
Naomi Yamaguchi, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (France), phonological annotation using PHON
Brigitte Bigi, CNRS - Université Aix-Marseille (France), automatic speech processing using SPPAS
Organizers : Fabian Santiago, Marie-Pierre Jouannaud, Takeki Kamiyama, Claire Pillot-Loiseau, Céline Horgues & Barbara Kühnert.

I hade the opportunity to coordinqte this summer school in France at the University of Montpellier Paul Valéry. We offered several workshops in statistics (statistical models, quantitative data analysis, experimental protocols, automatic data processing) aimed at PhD students and experienced researchers whose research focuses on foreign/second language acquisition with an experimental approach. We had the pleasure to listen to guest lecturers from a number of European universities, as well as a number of trainers experienced in statistical analysis applied to L1/L2 acquisition data. The content of the workshops will considered beginner and intermediate levels in statistics, and will also included training in the use of several free software packages. This Summer School was suported by Real2 network, as well as the CNRS, Paris 8 University and the University of Montpellier Paul Valéry

Ma... che cos’è Polytonia?
In October 2023, Bianca de Paolis and I organised a workshop on using the Polytonia and Prosogram tools to transcribe L2 prosody. We demonstrated the advantages of these tools by analysing examples of L2 French by Spanish and Italian learners. The workshop took place during the 2025 Real2 conference, 'Grammaire(s) et acquisition des L2 : approches, trajectoires, interfaces', at Grenoble University.
Our paper "Production of vowel reduction by Mexican learners of English as L2 and Russian as L3" has been accepted after 2 rounds in the Canadian Journal of Linguistics. After many zoom sessions and calls, we submitted a new version with major/minor changes. The three reviewers and the main Editor agreed with these changes and the paper will be published very soon. This study examines the cross-linguistic influences in the production of unstressed vowels of L2 English and L3 Russian by Mexican learners. See my publications for more information.
In one of them, we show that Madrilenian speakers articulate faster than Mexican talkers: Spaniards articulate 10% faster than Mexicans, producing 0,61 syllables more per second in fluent chunks. The paper will be published very soon in SICON (Spanish in Context) by John Benjamins
In the other one, we analyze the relashionship between vocabulary size and L2 pronunciation by Italian learners of L2 French. Globally speaking, we found a week correlation in intermediate/advanced learners suggesting that pronunciation and vocabulary size follo different paths. We will try to replicate this with beginners. The paper will be published this year in JFLS by Cambridge Core.

La Revue Française de Linguistique Appliquée
I coordinated the special issue on L2 phonetics for the French Review of Applied Linguistics (June, 2018). The papers are available from the CAIRN website.
Our workshop "The L2 Phonetics and Phonology by Romance L1 learners" was organized in Turin, 16-17 November 2017. We hope a new edition for this worhshop. Link:
