Hawaiian Voyaging Canoe Mo’okiha ‘o Pi’ilani Fundraiser
Dear Friends,
In Hawai'i, Maui's Polynesian Voyaging Society, the non-profit Hui O Wa'a Kaulua ("Assembly of the Double Hull Canoe"), through an all-volunteer effort, has been constructing the 62-foot Mo’okiha ‘o Pi’ilani (photos, video), a full-scale replica of a waʻa kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled transoceanic voyaging canoe of the type used in ancient times to discover & settle all the island nations of the Polynesian Triangle. The Society is only $41,000 & a few months away from completing Mo'okiha’s construction & launching her to begin sea trials and crew training. In 2013, Mo'okiha will join an historic Polynesian Voyaging Society project, the “Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage in which the Mo'okiha's sister ship will circumnavigate the Earth and promote a message of global sustainability.
To help raise the necessary funds in time, my wife Toni & I, being Friends of Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, have launched a special Hui website fundraiser project named “Building a Hawaiian Voyaging Canoe (video)”. Pledges of any amount are appreciated. Please consider contributing what you can and/or forwarding this message to as many of your friends & social networks as possible. Your efforts will give us the best chance for this project fundraiser to "go viral" and contribute to the full flowering of the Polynesian Renaissance.
