Grade calculation

When you will meet with Dr. Guglielmi, you will have to fill out a learning contract.

On this contract, Dr. Gugliemi and you will confirm how your final grade will be calculated.

You will be required to do the following:

1. Keep a personal journal written in French. This journal will be handwritten and each day will have an entry, from the time you leave the US to the day you return. This process will make you feel more at ease writing in French.

2. Write two papers on specific topics. These two (2) papers will have a length of 1,000 words each, will be written in French on different topics that the student will pick depending on his/her interest: museum visits, restaurant experience, city visits, etc.

3. Apply for the Global Engagement Certificate. For more information visit the website. You will have to place the entire form in your portfolio before you submit it.

4. Oral presentation upon your return. When you return from Belgium, you will make a presentation in French using PowerPoint. The topic of your presentation will be your internship and what you have learned during that experience. For the presentation, you will follow a specific format:

* I will provide a laptop and a LCD projector. The laptop has the latest software on it. Since you have access to the internet in the presentation room, you can mail your PP to yourself, or have it a flash drive, or on a CD. If you bring your own laptop and it is a MAC, be sure to have the adapter with you since our department doesn't have one.

* If you are schedule in the morning, please stay for the other 'morning' presentation as a courtesy. Same thing for the afternoon.

* Some faculty present may not be fluent in French and may ask you question in English, in that case, you may respond back in English, otherwise, please stay in the target language (French :-))

* Stay relax during the presentation, don't exceed your time (you have 30 minutes for your presentation AND questions)

FORMAT:

Slide zero: How are you evaluated? Present the contract, the percentage (we may have some people from the internship office, colleagues, etc... that wants to know how you earn your grade. It also shows to the public that this is NOT a vacation and that you will work hard to earn those credit hours.

Slide one: what have you done during your internship? Be VERY descriptive, talk about your schedule, the train ride (if any). This is VERY important since our claim is to say that you have worked the equivalent of 3 credit hours. Explain your challenges with the different tasks, the struggles, don't be afraid to show that you had a hard time (if it would have been easy, where is the point???)

Slide 2: what have you learned from this internship? Don't focus only on your language skills. Talk about the culture. Have you been shocked by some comments, attitudes ... etc. Stay professional during your comments but don't be afraid (again) to describe situation.

Slide 3: what could have been better? What you would have changed or done differently personally to be better prepared for this internship? What the university (the institution, our french program or me) could have been done before or during the internship.

Slide 4: What have you done outside of your internship (this should be linked with your written papers). I would develop a slide for each papers since you have done extensive research on those. However I would limit ONE slide per written paper.

Slide 5: your host family/youth hostel: various comments ... stay positive but don't be afraid to make suggestions. Remember that it is because of you that the program will improve for the following students ...

Here is a sample.
