Our Track Record
The Commission has a good track record of conservation and natural resource projects.
The Conservation Commission assisted the Selectmen in the purchase by the Town of the Oak Ridge Town Forest in 1982.
We assisted the Selectmen in the purchase by the Town of the 312 acre Glen Oakes land acquisition project in 2005.
We assisted the Selectmen in the purchase by the Town of the Smith Property which abuts and is now part of the Glen Oakes Town Forest.
We sponsored a wetland study of Spruce Swamp in 2003, Fremont Prime Wetland Study (Spruce Swamp), which was done done by Mark West, a wetlands scientist.
Later, we sponsored a separate Town Wide Wetlands Study (2006), also done by Mark West.
We engaged a forester to complete the Fremont Forest and Wildlife Action Plan for the Glen Oakes Town Forest.
As recommended in the plan, the Commission contracted with the Town forester, Charles Moreno, to manage the timber harvest of the Town Forests. The primary objective of the harvest was to improve the health of the forests.
We have sponsored a Glen Oakes BioBlitz Report where we created teams of professionals and volunteers to inventory plants and wildlife observed in selected areas of Glen Oakes.
The Conservation Commission completed a Natural Resource Inventory for the Town of Fremont with help from the Rockingham Planning Commission. This inventory was added to Fremont's Master Plan.
Members of the Fremont Conservation Commission, with the assistance of the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership, wrote A Citizen's Guide to Fremont's Water Resources. It was mailed to all residents of Fremont.
We have overseen the development of the Town of Fremont CTAP Open Space Report by Open Space with assistance from the Rockingham Planning Commission and with funding from the Community Technical Assistance Program (CTAP).
Public Outreach in conjunction with Open Space.
Kiosks were added to the Town Forests. These kiosks display maps, regulations, and information.
A trails brochure was created for the Glen Oakes Town Forest that includes a map and trail descriptions.
Trails have been added to the Oakridge Town Forest and these trails were added to a new and improved the trail map.
Open Space and the Conservation Commission have annual autumn foliage hikes in both Town Forests and on our new Cooperage Trail.
The Chair of Open Space scouted and then led us on a hike to preview proposed new trails and to preview land acquisition projects under consideration.
In conjunction with Open Space, we had a moonlight hike on the evening of the perigee moon. We wanted it to be a moonlight snowshoe, however mother nature wanted us to hike.
