Reflections National Arts Contest
The National PTA Reflections Arts Contest encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by providing positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Since it was founded in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, millions of students have benefited from this program. Participation is open to all Freedom Middle School students.
The 2025-2026 Reflections program theme is: I Belong!
How It Works
Students will submit to their English teacher a completed work of literature around the theme "I Belong," along with an artist statement. Accepted forms of fiction and nonfiction include prose, poetry, reflective essay, screen play and play script, narrative, and short story. Use of copyrighted material is prohibited. Writing must not exceed 2,000 words and may be handwritten or typed. Teachers will submit essays to the FMS PTSA’s Reflections contest this Fall.
PTSA will celebrate winners at the school level, and then forward winning entries in each age division and art category to Virginia PTA for regional judging.
Virginia PTA selects and submits the state’s winning entries to National PTA to compete against students from across the United States, and holds a Student Awards Celebration in March/April.
National PTA selects and announces winners of the national-level contest in May.
Volunteers will be needed to select winning essays within each grade level. Interested? Reach out to FMS PTSA.
