I find that the Pismo pier is a wonderful place to photograph surfers. I keep high and dry on the pier while the surfers do their thing on the break below.
It is a bit of a walk out to the vantage point, but that's good for me. Some surfers are quite relaxed on the wave while some really seem to get a workout.
Pismo Beach is also a great place for clam chowder and fish and chips.
There are old and young, male and female, fit ones and even a few overweight ones.
The surf might not be so good as at places like Maverics, but everyone seems to be having fun.
