Forest Ridge Wildfire Coalition was formed in 2009 by interested community members to educate and inform each other about the risks of wildfire in the Upper Squilchuck Valley, located 8 miles southwest from the city of Wenatchee,WA. The organization became a member of Firewise Communities, USA the following year. Forest Ridge has developed strong working relationships with Chelan County Fire District 1, Cascadia Conservation District and The Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
FRWC, in association with Columbia Breaks Fire Interpretive Center, is a 50l (c)(3) all volunteer, non-profit organization. The coalition depends on annual contributions and donations to keep property owners in the Upper Squilchuck Valley up-to-date and aware of the issues that affect living in the Wildland-Urban Interface.
Activities have included:
*A yearly neighborhood Firewise Get-Together in the spring.
*Chipper rental to help landowners reduce bio-mass on their properties.
*Bi-annual newsletter, encouraging landowners to get involved.
*Telephone Tree & Community Directory for emergencies.
*Free Risk Assessments for landowners.
*Photographing and monitoring bio-mass build up surrounding Forest Ridge.
*Fundraising for the Chelan County Fire Department, which resulted in the
purchase of an infrared device to help firefighters detect hot spots.
FRWC is not a homeowner's association. It is not a watchdog organization, nor is it an enforcement group. FRWC is interested in protecting life and property investments. It is about educating ourselves about fire danger and proactively helping our community. We volunteer because we believe in environmental stewardship. We believe in neighbors helping neighbors. We believe in living responsibly in the urban/wildfire interface and we believe in communities working together.
Below is the 2014 national award recognition given to five Firewise communities in the Country.
Forest Ridge Wildfire Coalition was one of those communities!
