Monica Bailey, Director of Flutes by the Score, is a professional flutist, teacher, arts advocate, volunteer and flute choir conductor who believes that performing is a vital part of a musicians life for amateur and professional alike. Monica received recognition for outstanding achievement in Arts & Culture with her Woman of Distinction Awards nomination, and continues to be described as a superb conductor, performer and leader, possessing high musicianship and talent. She released a CD for flute and harp, called “Fiesta” and composed a three movement work for flute choir, titled “Winter Prairie Moon”.
Monica was invited to present a lecture on, 'How to Start a Flute Choir in Canada' at the very first Canadian Flute Convention. As well, she showcased flute choir compositions by Manitoba composers in a sight-reading session, elevating Winnipeg's contributions to the nation. Monica conducted the world premiere of the Sleep's Borderland for piccolo, four alto flutes, two bass flutes, two contrabass flutes and one sub-contrabass flute composed by Diana McIntosh and performed by the Professional Flute Choir at the inaugural Canadian Flute Convention.
Monica is committed to life-long learning, excellence in flute playing and the development of community among musicians and music appreciators. Monica encourages her private flute students of all ages to take part in workshops, masterclasses and flute choir, to learn from many, and to discover their own voice.
Throughout the year, Monica volunteers her time to create performing opportunities for solo and ensemble flutists. She is a seasoned coach, having prepared many students for RCM Exams, music competitions, provincial and national youth band, and university auditions. Monica is fluent in French, holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg and studied music at the University of Manitoba.
