When we Say "I Believe"
What does it mean when a person states that they believe something? Consider:
I believe in Santa Claus.
I believe in love at first sight.
I believe in the promises of politicians.
I believe in _______________.
Stating that we believe something indicates a level of trust and faith. Often, the things we believe in are later discovered to be untrue. There are some things, however, that we can have full faith in, and those are the things that identify who we are. The Apostle's Creed, an ancient statement of faith, establishes a solid foundation of beliefs for people of faith.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
The third day He rose from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
from thence shall He come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Universal Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins
the resurrection of the body, and in life everlasting.
