1. Number the paragraphs
2. Circle key terms
   1. words that repeat, associated or connected with each other, key people/names
3. Underline or highlight important facts, phrases, details
4. Write in the margins
   1. claims about the prompt
   2. Descriptions / Characterizations of the prompt

Why do we annotate the text?

Annotating the text encourages you to really read the text while focused on the prompt. You interact with the text and make it a lot easier when it's time to write an argumentative response on the prompt. You already have your evidence highlighted and a general idea of how you can use the evidence in the margins.
