Graphic organizers help students interact with, outline, learn with and retain important information from a text. It is a study strategy that helps students determine:
what parts of a text are important
how the ideas and concepts are related
where to find additional information
Graphic organizers are valuable to students because they require students to visualize the structure of texts and to reorganize information as they determine what is important. Teachers and the teacher librarian at Fraser Heights will present students with various graphic organizers to illustrate the textual material that students will be reading and studying in their content area.
For example:
Cause and Effect Organizer
Venn Diagram
Compare and Contrast Organizer
Definition and Explanation Organizer
Example Organizer
Problem/Solution Organizer
Shower of Stars Oganizer
This reorganization of text material requires active processing which results in improved comprehension and retention. After students practice with these standardized graphic organizers and become familiar with and aware of text structure they can create their own.
