Grade 8 Library Learning Commons Bootcamp

Activity 1:

 Locating Areas of the FH Library Learning Commons

  Find the locations/objects on the list.  At each location, take a #shelfie with your partner AND/OR answer the questions on your sheet.     

1. Selfie: Where you go to charge your phone (there is a special place with lots of cords it's not just a random plug in the wall)

2. Find the 10 fiction genres (ex. romance) and list them. Hint: the signs are everywhere! 

3. There are 3 non-fiction areas in the library 

a. Find the Indigenous People's collection and write down two genres they have 

b. Find the non-fiction genres next to the IPC collection and write down all six (hint-you'll have to crouch down to see two of them)

C. Find the non-fiction section against the wall that still uses the Dewey Decimal system (numbers on the spine label). Write down 3 categories that exist there. 

4. Selfie: Where the (older) Surrey Teens Read books are. Hint: It's not on the table. 

5. Where is the Manga? What other genre is there? 

6. Selfies: Where you return books (2 different places-one is outside the library)

7. Find the light message box on my desk: What is its message? 

8. Selfie: Find the entrance to the Career center Office

9. Selfie: Find the sticky note window display question

10. Check out the display on the outside of the library. What is it? (It always changes and it has to do with BOOKS)

11. Selfie: Where you go to check out your books

12. Selfie: Where the graphic novels are

13. Our library cat. What's its name? 

14. Selfie: Where Ms. P-J gives presentations (or you?)

15. Find the poster with the QR code to request books! Take a shelfie with it.

Activity 3a:  READ CAREFULLY! MANY STEPS!

1. On this website,  go to the drop down menu at the top that says "More" or to the three lines on the left

2.  Under "Find a Great Read" check out the Surrey Teens Read website. 

3. Click on the three lines and then  "2024-25" Nominated Titles" and read about each of this year’s nominees. Watch the videos for a minute or so.    

On your handout, write down: 

1.     Which Surrey Teen Reads book seemed the most interesting to you?

Activity 7: 

Finding books on the shelf

Find each with the following books.  DO NOT  take the books off the shelf. Your shelfie won't count if you are holding the book!

Take a #shelfie  AT THE SHELF WHERE YOU FIND EACH OF THEM (7 total)

1.   A romance book by Jenny Han (Romance section under HAN)

2.   A non-fiction book about social justice (NON-FICTION-look for the category- under 305)

3.   A graphic novel true story

4.   The Surrey Teens Read 2024/2025 collection--hint-It's on a table! 

5.   A book about the Middle Ages (NON-FICTION 940.1)

6.   A picture book you remember from elementary school (on the PICTURE BOOKS shelf)
