Tips for earning an A

Tips For Earning An

A

In Science

Class Tips

· Complete class work.

· Request to be seated away from talkative and distracting students.

· Request to sit where you can see and hear the teacher.

· Ask for help after you have tried to understand and still do not.

· Demand respect from others. You have a right to hear and to learn.

It is important

that you do not participate in disruptive behavior of other students.

This only adds to classroom chaos and prevents you from paying attention.

Website

This website is useful for both you and your parents. Use it:

    • To keep track of your notes
    • To use as a study tool
    • To help you stay organized and be successful

Online Learning websites

We use several online learning websites to teach and reinforce concepts taught in class.

Going over these again at home will help. Please click the menu button called

"Online links" on my main web page.

    • Canvas - online interactive notes and quizzes.
    • Gizmos - animations and online labs.
    • Online textbook - gives details information in text and video form.

Grades Online

    • Checking your grades online will help you track your success.
    • Use it to figure out what you are missing, and turn it in.
    • Print any missing assignments online straight from the gradebook.
    • Check your grades online at least 2 times a week.

Homework Tips

Record your homework so you can look it up when you get home.

Have a separate folder for your homework. Take this folder to every class.

Study in a quiet place(with no distractions) where you are sitting up at a table or desk.

Avoid sitting around food, TV, computers, phones, or a bed.

Distractions won't get the studying done.

Have a homework schedule for each day. Schedule it around after school activities.

Benefit of Homework

    • Homework is intended to give you extra opportunities to review and practice
    • what is taught in class. Extra exposure allows your brain to process and think
    • through the material one more time before we have class again.
    • Homework is also intended to be a tool for studying and test preparation.
    • The average brain needs to think about something about 14 times before it is a
    • part of your memory.
    • Homework can also be an opportunity for enrichment. There is so much
    • more to this world than what we teach in class. Enrichment activities allow
    • you to discover the world around you.

Studying Tips

· Make sure that your review materials are complete and correct.

· Spend about 20-30 minutes studying each night before the test.

· Get your study log signed.

· Use study strategies such as:

ü Create flashcards

ü Quiz yourself

ü Have someone quiz you

ü Teach someone

ü Write notes without looking

ü Practice writing an essay about a topic

ü Form a study group

Parents:

· Check grades online at least once a week. Changes in grades can occur suddenly, especially if your child is having difficulty with friends, managing extra curricular demands, or is not communicating academic difficulties.

· Create a reward/consequence system if writing down the homework is an issue AND your child has low grades.

· Check over homework. If you see that your child is struggling, it is ok to provide assistance.

· Make sure your child knows exactly what they are struggling with, so they can ask me in class the next day. This could be done by quizzing your child on test material.

· Have your child complete homework in a place that you can monitor effectively. Bedrooms and family rooms are often distracting places for adolescents.

Communication:

  • Comments are made in the online gradebook. I usually provide explanations for low grades.
  • Student planner – useful if you have any concerns or questions that I need to address.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that I see the planner.
  • Phone – Front desk (281) 856-5100
