Memorials
FRIENDS
I look around me
and see all my friends,
hear their voices and
their laughter through the years.
They move not as quickly
nor quite as spryly
as they did long ago.
Wasn’t it just yesterday?
I now walk where once I ran.
My hair (Where did all that gray come from?)
isn’t quite as black as it once was.
My friends and I sit and talk
of yesterday, and as we sit,
children come and call to them
saying, “Grandfather! Grandfather!”
And as we talk I think of friends
that now I see only in memory,
only in my heart;
For they have had to travel on.
Their laughter, their tears,
their hopes and their fears
have all passed on,
but as long as we remember them,
they are near.
