Australian Sinophobia & China-Bashing From Colonial Persecution & White Australia To Trump America’s Asia Deputy Sheriff

White Australia has had a nasty record of Sinophobia from persecution of Chinese gold miners (involving exclusion, deportations and violent riots), exclusion from jobs and unions, exclusion from immigration via the White Australia Policy, and war against Chinese in the Boxer Rebellion and the Korean War. 45 years of rapprochement has been interrupted with present Australian support for Trump America’s anti-Chinese policies as Trump America’s loyal Asia Deputy Sheriff , notwithstanding China now being Australia’s biggest trading partner. Will sane, anti-racist Australians prevail over US lackey jingoism?

White Australia’s historical, deep fear of Asia and China derives from basic human xenophobia complicated by British imperial notions of British and White racial superiority and the fear that the vastly more numerous Asians and Chinese might dispossess White Australia just as White Australians robbed the Indigenous Australians (Aborigines) of a whole continent in a continuing Aboriginal Genocide and Aboriginal Ethnocide [1]. It is this latter fear of the so-called “Yellow Peril” that has made Australia a blindly loyal ally of the US that has participated in all post-1950 US Asian wars, atrocities that have been associated with 40 million Asian deaths from violence or war-imposed deprivation [2]. China’s development of disputed uninhabited atolls in the South China Sea has been used by the US and its craven ally Australia to ramp up military posturing in relation to China, and has put Australia in a difficult position because China is now Australia’s biggest trading partner.

The US lackey Australian Coalition Government is predictably in line with the US Trump Administration’s anti-China position over the South China Sea, this cowardly and traitorous jingoism increasing the probability of conflict and damage to Sino-Australian relations and Sino-Australian trade. There is a huge hypocrisy in the Trump American and Australian position over the uninhabited South China Sea atolls because the US and Australia rank first and second, respectively, as supporters of nuclear terrorist Apartheid Israel that has occupied the densely populated Occupied Palestinian Territory for 50 years as well as parts of Lebanon and Syria [2].

A much more considered, contemporary expert view is that China has a remarkably long history as a major power of not invading other countries, a reality appreciated by Mandarin-speaking former Australian Labor PM Kevin Rudd [my numerical addenda in squarer brackets] : “Mine is not a starry-eyed optimism. I have lived in China, travelled in China and studied China in one capacity or another for most of my life. Like all civilisations, it reflects an accumulation of historical experiences, perceptions and achievements. But China’s history does provide us with a reasonable basis for optimism. The China that I have studied over the decades is one that has not been in the business of invading other countries for more than 2,000 years. Nor has China sought to establish colonies around the world, even though its navigational skills and naval capabilities during the Ming Dynasty were considerably more advanced than those of countries in the west. China’s modern political consciousness has been badly seared by what the Chinese routinely and legitimately describe as a century of foreign humiliation, from the [British] opium wars [together with the Tai Ping rebellion, up to 100 million dead] to the end of the Japanese occupation [35 million Chinese killed, 1937-1945]. China in effect remained internationally isolated for the first half of its communist history, and only in the past three decades has it begun to engage systematically the world once again. China today seeks respect in the eyes of the world for the contributions of its ancient civilisation and modern economy. These are all historical truths that we in the west can work with” [3].

Further, China’s position as Australia’s biggest trading partner means that genuinely patriotic Australians must find an Australian-centred position in its China trade versus US Alliance dilemma [4-12]. Thus, for example, Richard Woolcott (former Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, eminent ambassador and Founding Director of Asia Society Australia) has wisely stated the obvious (2017): “Australia must pursue more balanced and appropriate defence, security, trade and immigration policies that are linked to its own real national interests, rather than the interests of any political parties of the moment – Australian or foreign … A US role in the Asian and South West Pacific region, which genuinely acknowledges China’s right to have substantial influence in an area of major interest to it – the South China Sea – is needed” [7].

Nevertheless, Australia is a liberal, multi-party democracy whereas China can be legitimately criticized for being a one party state with the death penalty, censorship, urban air pollution and harsh treatment of dissidents. However the most fundamental human right is the right to life and China has abolished deadly endemic poverty with the consequence that annual avoidable deaths from deprivation are essentially zero in pluralist China but total an appalling 4 million in democracy India [2, 9, 12-16]. China has been hugely successful in radically reducing infant mortality and maternal mortality in Tibet and in China as a whole. In stark contrast, the war criminal US Alliance occupation of neighbouring Afghanistan continues to be associated with an under-1 infant mortality and maternal mortality incidence that is 7 times higher and 4-12 times higher, respectively, than that in Tibet – evidence of gross violation of the Geneva Convention and the UN Genocide Convention by the US Alliance [9].

History ignored yields history repeated [16]. Accordingly, below is a brief account of Australian Sinophobia in the 19th century, 20th century and the 21st century.

19th century Australian Sinophobia.

.Prior to European invasion in the 18th century, India and China were the dominant economic powers in the world, contributing about 25% and 23% , respectively, of world GDP in 1700, but after British invasion this shrank rapidly, reaching about 5% in 1950 [17]. British conquest of India and inroads into China led to deadly enslavement of Indians and deadly disempowerment of China through the insidious British-enforced trade of Indian opium for Chinese tea and silver [2, 12-16]. Indian life expectancy was a mere 27 years when the British left India after a 2 century Indian Holocaust in which 1,800 million Indians died avoidably from deprivation [12-16]. Chinese deaths in the Opium Wars and the Tai Ping rebellion totalled as many as 100 million [2]. The east coast of Australia was “discovered” and claimed for Britain by Captain James Cook in 1770. Britain, involved in a long-standing war with France in Europe, North America and India, rapidly moved to make Australia a strategic penal colony. Australia was founded in 1788 on the slave labour of white convicts who endured appalling savagery at places such as Norfolk Island, Botany Bay (New South Wales), Macquarie Harbor and Port Arthur (Tasmania), Morton Bay (Queensland) and the Swan River (Western Australia). Transported for offences that were relatively trivial in many cases, the convicts were routinely abused and flogged. Parcelled out to free settlers, convict slave labour provided the raw muscle of the new colonies that had a penal basis. Labour shortages led to limited introduction of Indian labour into New South Wales in the 1840s but already the notion of Australia for white people only had crept into public consciousness. Surviving Aborigines (Indigenous Australians) were used as effective rural slave labour into the late 20th century. In the late 19th century kidnapped Melanesian slave labour (so-called Kanakas) from the South Pacific was used on Queensland sugar cane farms [17, 18]\.

With the discovery of gold in New South Wales and Victoria in the mid-19th century came greatly expanded immigration, including a major influx of Chinese from coastal regions of Southern China. This in turn led to anti-Chinese sentiment, riots, entry restrictions, deportations, beatings, and killings. The Chinese influx into goldmining areas was so substantial that Chinese could represent a significant proportion of the male population. Chinese represented 11% of the Victorian population in 1861. The largest expressions of anti-Chinese sentiment were the Lambing Flats riots in New South Wales in which about 1,000 Chinese goldminers were violently driven from their diggings with many being injured (nearly all the White miners arrested were acquitted) [19]. The profound anti-Chinese sentiment lead to 19th century immigration restrictions and eventually to the total prohibition of entry by what became known as the White Australia Policy of federated Australia in 1901 [18-22].

The following quotes illustrate the deep racism of prevailing attitudes:

Daniel Henry Deniehy, speech to Parliament on restriction of Chinese immigration (1858): “He ... saw no more injustice in preventing the landing of this degraded race, who would not only lower and demoralize, but also endanger the safety of the country, than he saw in stopping the “running “ of a cargo of contraband opium or brandy.”

A.B. “Banjo” Patterson (an Australian national treasure and still portrayed on the $10 note) and his poem “A Bushman’s Song” (1891): “I asked a cove for shearin’ once along the Marthaguy:/ We shear non-union here” says he. “I call it scab,” says I./ I looked along the shearin’ floor before I turned to go -/There was eight or ten dashed Chinamen a-shearin’ in a row .../It was shift, boys, shift, for there wasn’t the slightest doubt./It was time to make a shift with the leprosy about./So I saddled up my horses and I whistled to my dog,/ And I left his scabby station at the old jig-jog.”

Henry Lawson (another Australian national treasure) and his violence-promoting poem “Cambaroora Star” (written to commemorate the closure of the “Boomerang”, a Labor journal edited by racist Laborite William Lane, who was to found an Australian socialist Paraguay colony with the non-racist writer Mary Gilmore and others): “There was strife about the Chinamen, who came in days of old/ Like a swarm of thieves and loafers when the diggers found the gold .../ What’s the good of holding meetings when you only talk and swear?/ Get a move upon the Pig-tails when you’ve got an hour to spare./ It was nine o’clock next morning when the Chows began to swarm/ But they weren’t so long in going, for the white men’s blood was warm.”

Federal Australian Labor Party platform (1900): “Total exclusion of coloured and other undesirable races.”

Bernard O’Dowd, racist Australian poet (circa 1900): “Yea, will we steel us to the death to fight -/ In such poor means alone avail - whome’er,/ Or Asian throng, or island brown, or white/ Blood-brother e’en, would cloud our prospect fair,/ To guard the future from exotic blight!” [18].

20th century Australian Sinophobia.

Despite the near-extermination of the aborigines, the very presence of other non-Europeans, such as Chinese and Kanakas exacerbated European racial antagonism that sprang from psycho-sexual fears as well as from the more practical employment and income concerns of white workers. This found expression in all kinds of State, trade union and other organizational restrictions directed against non-Europeans including Chinese [22]. The industrial concerns of white workers became acute in the 1890s associated with economic recession and saw a final expression in the “unofficial” but very real restrictions on non-European immigration known as the “White Australia Policy”. The rather inexplicit legislative basis for this was passed as the Commonwealth Immigration Restriction Bill (1901).by the Australian Federal Parliament in 1901. The British Government, represented by Joseph Chamberlain, British Secretary of State for the Colonies, was deeply concerned about White Australia giving to unnecessary offence to the Japanese and the hundreds of millions of non-European British Empire subjects, and got the Australian Government to tone down its language in this legislation that ultimately simply gave discretion to Ministers of Immigration to covertly determine who could enter Australia. Asians and other non-Europeans quickly recognized this as the White Australia Policy. Indeed the Australia Government quickly moved to deport thousands of Kanakas and to cut off centuries-old family and trading links between Northern Territory Aborigines and the Macassans of Indonesia.

In the 20th century Chinese in Australia were subject to restrictions on union membership and employment [17]. Chinese notably went into laundering, market gardening and restaurants (the former medical surgery of my Australian maternal grandfather, Dr Horace Whitehead, in Deniliquin, a country town in New South Wales, eventually became a Chinese restaurant). There was a racist horror among White Australians of Australian women marrying Chinese men. In the late 1930s leading political figure Robert Menzies notoriously permitted Australian exports of pig iron to Imperial Japan that was raping China (35 million Chinese died in the WW2 Chinese Holocaust, 1937-1945 [23]), this earning him the sobriquet “Pig Iron” Bob.

Anti-Chinese sentiments were boldly advanced by leading Australian figures as exampled below:

Edmund Barton (Australia’s first Prime Minister) debating the Commonwealth Immigration Restriction Bill (1901): “The doctrine of the equality of man was never intended to apply to the equality of an Englishman and the Chinaman.”

Henry Lawson in a poem “The Old, Old Story” (1913). “Beware of the East, O Christian, for the sake of your fairest and best;/ It is written, and written, remembered, that the tide of invasion goes west.”

An attack by the racist magazine “The Bulletin” on Joseph Chamberlain, British Secretary of State for the Colonies, over his rejection of racist Queensland legislation (1901): “If Judas Chamberlain [UK Secretary of State for the Colonies] can find a black, or brown or yellow race in Asia or Africa, that has as high a standard of civilisation and intelligence as the whites, that is as progressive as the whites, as brave, as sturdy, as good nation-making material, and that can intermarry with the whites without the mixed progeny showing signs of deterioration, that race is welcome in Australia regardless of colour.”

Politician King O’Malley in a Federal Parliamentary speech (1901): “We are here upon a continent set apart by the Creator for a Southern empire - for a Southern nation - and it is our duty to preserve this island continent for all eternity to the white race, irrespective of where they may come from.”

Henry Lawson in his poem “To Be Amused” (ca 1910): “I see the colour line so drawn/ (I see it plain and speak I must),/ That our brown masters of the dawn/ Might, aye, have fair girls for their lusts” [18].

After WW2 Australia was gripped by fear of the “Yellow Peril” (Darwin had been bombed by the Japanese and Australia feared Japanese invasion, although this was unlikely [23]). This fear led to the notion of “populate or perish” and there was a massive program of acquiring White immigrants from the UK or from the Displaced Person camps of war-devastated Europe. Labor politician Arthur Calwell was the Minister of Immigration in the post-war Labor Government (1945-1949) and his officers scoured the Displaced Persons camps of Europe for suitable White migrants. Anecdotal accounts have it that “blond and blue eyed” people were regarded as particularly suitable migrants in these years immediately following the liberation of the Nazi German concentration camps.

In relation to the deportation of a Chinese refugee Wong in 1947 Calwell made the following declaration in Federal Parliament: “There are many Wongs in the Chinese community, but I have to say - and I am sure that the honourable member for Balaclava [T.W. White, Liberal] will not mind me for doing so - that “two Wongs do not make a White”.”

Defending his attempt to deport an Indonesian woman Mrs Annie O’Keefe (married to an Australian) and her eight children in 1949, Calwell declared to Parliament:“We can have a white Australia, we can have a black Australia, but a mongrel Australia is impossible, and I shall not take the first steps to establish the precedents which will allow the floodgates to be opened.”

Major difficulties were placed in the way of Japanese “war brides” of Australian Occupation Forces soldiers being united with their husbands. Attributed to Calwell is the virulent assertion: “We will not let the yellow hordes contaminate our golden shores.” Ironically, Calwell had learned Mandarin and was interested in Chinese culture [18].

Although Australians generally believe the official line that Australians faced invasion by the Japanese in WW2, it seems that the Japanese had abandoned a plan to invade early in the war [24]. Indeed the entry of Japan into WW2 was the culmination of Anglo-American machinations, secured post-war US global domination and secured victory over Nazi Germany through US entry into the war [16]. With entry of the US into the war, Australia became a loyal ally of the US. Post-WW2 the fear of the “Yellow Peril” and “Asian invasion” was compounded with fear of the “Red menace”. Australia participated as a US ally in the Korea War in which Chinese forces supported the North Koreans and an estimated 28% of the North Korean population died from US bombing [25].

While Australians still fear “Asian invasion”, the horrible converse reality is that Australia as UK or US lackeys have invaded 85 countries (30 genocidally so), as compared to the British 193 countries, France 82, the US 72 (52 after WW2), Germany 39, Japan 30, Russia 25, Canada 25, Apartheid Israel 12 and China 2 [26, 27]. In the post-WW2 era a variously Asia-, Communism- and Muslim-fearing Australia was involved in all post-1950 US Asian wars, atrocities in which 40 million Asians died from violence or war-imposed deprivation [2]. A deeply racist Australia has been an enthusiastic US partner in the US War on Muslims in which 32 million Muslims have died from violence, 5 million, or from deprivation, 27 million, in 20 countries invaded by the US Alliance since the US Government’s 9-11 false flag atrocity [28, 29]. Zionist-subverted, US lackey Australia is second only to Trump America as a supporter of nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide, neo-Nazi-run Apartheid Israel, despite the reality of 5 billion Asians and Africans and 1.6 billion Muslims between Australia and Mother England. Politically correct racist (PC racist) White Australians wouldn’t dare to admit it, but in their heart of hearts they have sympathy for the view blatantly expressed by an Israeli Ambassador to Australia: “Israel and Australia are like sisters in Asia. We are in Asia without the characteristics of Asians. We don’t have yellow skin and slanted eyes. Asia is basically the yellow race. Australia and Israel are not - we are basically the white race. We are on the western side of Asia and they are on the southeastern side. Israel has not fully acknowledged the value of working together with Australia in Asia. It’s a way for us to cooperate with and enhance our position in the countries neighboring Australia” [30].

A sorry anti-Chinese Australian history seemed to be coming to an end with the revolutionary visit to China of reformist Labor leader Gough Whitlam as Leader of the Opposition (1971), the Whitlam Labor Government transfer of recognition from Taiwan to the People's Republic of China (1972), Prime Minister Whitlam’s visit to China (1973), re- establishment of Australian diplomatic relations with China (1973), and abolition of the so-called White Australia Policy (1974) [31, 32]. The Whitlam Labor policy on China presaged the visit of US President Richard Nixon to China (1972) and eventual US transfer of diplomatic recognition of China from Taiwan to the People's Republic of China (1979). . Even though the Whitlam Government (1972-1975) was terminated by a US CIA-backed Coup [33], Australia continued steady improvement of relations with China that has now become Australia’s biggest trading partner. However with the installation as US president of the primitive jingoist, racist and Sinophobe Donald Trump in 2017, US lackey Australia has become caught between sane, rational and business-like relations with China versus the sabre-rattling Sinophobia of the Trump Administration that resonates with the longstanding anti-Asian racism of White Australia that still exists in a chunk of the Australian population. This anti-Asian racism is exemplified by the crass, Trumpist One Nation Party (10% electoral support) whose xenophobic leader Pauline Hanson notoriously declared in her 1996 maiden speech to the Federal Parliament: “I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians.” [34-36].

21st century Australian Sinophobia.

In the 21st century Australia remains a Zionist-subverted US lackey and as such is committed to the racist, pro-war, and pro-Apartheid position of Zionist-subverted America. However Australia’s position has become complicated by China’s emergence as Australia’s biggest trading partner. Sane, sensible and patriotic Australian experts argue for an Australia-centred position in relation to the China trade versus US Alliance problem. However what former PM Malcolm Fraser described as “a slavish devotion to the US” has led Australia to blindly support Trump America and hence its dangerously aggressive anti-China stance. Some key matters pertaining to current Australia-China relations are briefly set out below.

1. China but not Australia respects the right to life. In 2016 China (population 1.4 billion) had a GDP of $11.2 trillion as compared to Australia (population 24 million) with a GDP of $1.2 trillion [37, 38]. While in 2016 per capita GDP (nominal) for China was $8,126 as compared to $54,069 for Australia, avoidable deaths from deprivation were about zero (0) in both countries [2]. In contrast, for US Alliance- and Australia-occupied Afghanistan (population 34 million) 2016 per capita GDP (nominal) was $584 and annual avoidable deaths from deprivation totalled 101,000 [2]. The most fundamental human right is the right to life. While legitimately criticized for the one party state, the death penalty, censorship, urban air pollution and harsh treatment of dissidents, China has been hugely successful in eliminating endemic poverty and hence avoidable death from deprivation. The continuing huge avoidable mortality from deprivation in Occupied Afghanistan is evidence of gross violation by the US Alliance and Australia of the UN Genocide Convention and of Articles 55 and 56 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War that unequivocally state that the Occupier must supply its Subjects with life-sustaining food and medical services “to the fullest extent of the means available to it” [39- 41].

2. Lunacy - US lackey Australia would join a US war on China. WikiLeaks revealed that former PM Rudd had suggested war with China to Hillary Clinton if China did not play ball: “[Help integrate China] while also preparing to deploy force if everything goes wrong'' [42, 43], and that former Australian Ambassador to the US, Kim Beazley, promised that Australian forces would be involved in a US war on China [5]. Australia, New Zealand and the US have a mutual defence ANZUS Pact. It is estimated that Australia’s annual “defence” budget of circa $30 billion would have to double if Australia were not part of the ANZUS Pact. Dr Stephen FitzGerald, Australia’s first ambassador to China in 1973 after the 1949, Mao Tse Tung-led Communist revolution, says Australia must be more independent of the US and should “[eliminate collaborations that] have the potential to involve us in a US conflict, including the US marine base in Darwin and the use of Pine Gap for purposes where Australian interests do not align with America’s”[44]. Various eminent Australian politicians, notably former prime minister Paul Keating, former Labor foreign ministers Gareth Evans and Bob Carr and former Liberal Party PM, the late Malcolm Fraser, have similarly urged caution in Australia’s interest while still supporting ANZUS [44]. However the US lackey Coalition demands “all the way with the USA” with PM Turnbull declaring that Australia would be involved in a US war with China-allied North Korea, a position rejected by former Labor PM Kevin Rudd: “John Howard gave President Bush a blank cheque on Iraq. You never as an Australian prime minister, as an ally of the United States, give the Americans, before the event, a blank cheque. But for an Australian prime minister to say we automatically would become militarily involved in the event of a North Korean attack, frankly, I think, is irresponsible in terms of our core national security interests” [45].

3. Australia’s New White Australia Policy discriminates against Chinese. Chinese as well as Asians in general, Africans, South Americans and Eastern Europeans wishing to obtain a visa to enter Australia will quickly discover that there are 2 basic categories of entrants , (a) those from the predominantly White countries and some rich, “honorary White” countries, and (b) those from predominantly non-White countries and some “poor White” countries from Eastern Europe. The Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection states that for an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) visa (processing fee A$20; average processing time less than 1 day) [my emphasis in bold]: “ To apply, you must hold a passport issued by one of the countries or regions listed below. If you hold a non-citizen passport or other travel document, such as a Certificate of Identity, you are not eligible to apply for an ETA. Eligible passports are issued by: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong (SAR of China), Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Portugal, Republic of San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain , Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan , The Netherlands, United Kingdom—British Citizen, United Kingdom—British National (Overseas), United States,Vatican City (must not purport to be an official or diplomatic passport)”. The “honorary White” countries are rich, namely Brunei, Hong Kong (SAR of China), Japan, Malaysia, Singapore , South Korea and Taiwan. And then there are the rest – the Chinese, the non-Whites, the “poor Whites” and those with criminal records – who must apply for a Visitor Visa subclass 600 that carries a base application charge ranging from A$135 to AUD1,000, and requires non-electronic lodging of detailed financial and other information. Australia is telling the Chinese, non-Whites and “poor Whites” that it does not trust them not to be absconders and violators of Australian law [46].

4. China is Australia’s biggest trading partner. Annual Australian merchandise exports to China presently total about $110 billion and Chinese merchandise exports to Australia total about $60 billion. The China–Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) came into force on 20 December 2015, and on full implementation makes 95 percent of Australian exports to China tariff free [47]. This trade is huge and should not be compromised by Australian Sinophobia ranging from the primitive xenophobia of the One Nation Party to the present Coalition Government’s “slavish devotion” to Trump American anti-China militarism.

5. Australia grossly rips off Chinese and other overseas university students. In 2016 there were 554,179 full-fee paying international students in Australia, 43% in higher education, 26% in vocational education, 21% in English Language Intensive Courses and 3% in schools. These so-called “education exports” are worth about $21 billion annually to the Australian economy, this making International Education the third largest Australian export sector. India and China are the biggest sources of students [48]. However Australian greed and mendacity may yet kill the goose that continues to lay golden eggs. Former Labor PM Gough Whitlam abolished university fees in 1974 before he was removed in a CIA-backed Coup in 1975. A subsequent very pro-US Labor PM Bob Hawke re-instituted university fees in 1989, albeit under a long-term, low interest, debt repayment scheme for Australian students that was initially called the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) and is now known as the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) scheme [49]. However simply off the table for public discussion in look-the-other-way, Murdochracy and Lobbyocracy Australia is the reality that university education can and should be free.

All nations need to have a complement of expert scholars and scientists for variety of economic, health, national security and national prestige reasons - but one must ask why impoverished, circa 20 year old undergraduate students should have to pay for this expert complement that disproportionately and immediately benefits the mature adult population and the richer and older citizens in particular. Further, if university education were about “reading for degrees” (i.e. reading the detailed course notes, teaching materials and prescribed textbooks) then the only cost would be the trivial one of examination. Indeed many overseas students paying huge fees and living costs for studying at Australian universities are actually forced to do “reading for degrees” because their reading comprehension of English is much greater than their aural comprehension (this being exacerbated by the Australian English of their lecturers). Australia is egregiously ripping off Chinese and other overseas university students. Many countries, both rich and poor, have made tertiary education free for their citizens (and in some cases also for non-citizens) , the list including (GDP per capita in US dollars in brackets; UN data, 2014-2015): Argentina ($12,645) , Barbados ($15,429), Brazil ($11,387), Chile ($14,528), China ($7,617), Cuba ($7,274), Czech Republic ($19,470), Denmark ($61,294), Ecuador ($6,346), Estonia ($20,122), Finland ($49,678), France ($42, 802), Germany ($47,966), Greece ($21,414), Iceland ($52,048), Libya ($6,602), Malta ($23,281), Mauritius ($9,945), Norway ($97,226), Scotland ($24,060), Slovenia ($23,954), Sweden ($58,856), Trinidad and Tobago ($20,452), Turkey ($9,126) and Uruguay ($15,574) [50].

6. US Deputy Sheriff Australia’s hostility to China presence in the South Pacific. The South Pacific was “Australia’s patch” because of extensive slaving (“blackbirding”) in the 19th century and thence extensive commercial interests. After WW2 Australia became a US Deputy Sheriff in Asia, South East Asia and the South Pacific. However the US-complicit 1987 military coups in Fiji led to instability and mass Indian departure, the 2000 Apartheid Israel-complicit George Speight Coup and the most recent 2006 military Coup by Commodore Frank Bainimarama that was effected in response to corruption and anti-Indian racism [51, 52]. Australia was extremely hostile to Bainimarama, and China moved to fill the vacuum. Democracy was eventually restored and Bainimarama was overwhelmingly elected as Prime Minister (2016). However in 2017 the Australian ABC (Australia’s equivalent of the UK BBC) mounted a succession of bizarre attacks on the Bainimarama Government via an Israeli Australian journalist [51]

In 2018 the Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Coalition Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, criticized China development aid to the Pacific ($2.3 billion since 2006) for constructing “useless buildings" and useless roads: “We just don't want to build a road that doesn't go anywhere. We want to ensure that the infrastructure that you do build is actually productive and is actually going to give some economic benefit or some sort of health benefit. We work cooperatively with China, we encourage China to utilise its development assistance in a productive and effective manner. In other words, we just don't want to build something for the heck of building it”[53]. Labor Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman, Chinese Australian Penny Wong, commented: “China has played an increasing role in the Pacific while the Coalition [Government] under Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull have increasingly abandoned the region. They have relentlessly hacked at our aid funding, seeing an $11 billion cut to the development budget since they won government”[53]. China has lodged a formal protest with the Australian Government, with China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang labelling the Minister Fierravanti-Wells’ comments as “nothing but irresponsible” and showing “scant regard for the facts”: “ The assistance provided by China has significantly fuelled the economic and social development of these countries and delivered tangible benefits to the local people, which has been warmly welcomed by the governments and people of these countries. We hope that certain people in Australia should engage in self-reflection instead of pointing fingers at and making irresponsible remarks on other countries” [54]. Australia’s foreign aid is now a mere 0.2% of Gross National Income versus Sweden’s 1.4% [55, 56]. In contrast to Australian parsimony and its involvement in US bombing of 7 countries (targeted by its Pine Gap spying facility in Central Australia [57]), China is making massive investments in useful economic projects throughout the world (notably in the Belt and Road trading route initiative) - between 2000 and 2014 the Chinese Government committed $354.3 billion to 140 countries (mostly investment in infrastructure) in comparison to $394.6 billion of US official finance (mostly official development assistance) [58, 59].

7. A paranoid US lackey Australia punishes Australia-China links. In 2009 Labor Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon's contacts with Chinese businesswoman Helen Liu resulted in his forced resignation on the basis that she had connections with the Chinese Government [60]. In 2016, Senator Sam Dastyari, an Iranian-origin, right-wing Labor figure and a great fund-raiser for the Labor Party, made the mistake of securing a tiny amount of money from Top Education Institute, a Chinese education company with links to the Chinese Government, for miniscule travel expenses that amounted to a trivial circa $1,700 (like picking up the tab for a business dinner) as compared to the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to the Lib-Labs (Coalition and Labor) by Chinese businesses. It also emerged through media spies or Australian Intelligence in 2016 that Dastyari had contradicted US lackey Labor’s slavishly pro-US policy on the South China Sea territorial dispute by unexceptionally stating in a speech to a Chinese audience that “the Chinese integrity of its borders is a matter for China”. Dastyari was forced to resign from his ministerial position but in 2017 his enemies wanted more, adduced more against him, falsely accused him of being a “double agent” and finally secured his resignation from parliament “in the interests of the Labor Party”.

The hounding and political destruction of Senator Sam Dastyari reveals an utterly unacceptable attack on an Australian MP and Australian democracy by anonymous spooks connected with Australian Intelligence. Emboldened by the slavish response from US lackey Mainstream Australia that bayed for Dastyari’s blood, Australian Intelligence is now reported by the conservative, US-owned newspaper “The Australian” to have identified 10 more political candidates it objects to [62]. Leading Australian security academic Professor Hugh White in criticizing the 2017 Australian Defence White Paper for assuming that the US will somehow resolve Australia’s China-US dilemma, has commented thus on the implications of the Sam Dastyari affair (2017): “He was naïve … [China is] a power that is going to be more interested in influencing what happens in Australia than any we have encountered before and I do think that’s going to be a significant challenge. On the other hand, I don’t think it is up to the Intelligence Agencies to make the decisions on that. And one of the slightly worrying things about the way the Sam Dastyari story has come out, there is to my mind a sense , if you look at the stories, that we might be seeing our Intelligence Agencies leaking information, either with authorization of the Government or not, about material they’re collecting in their intelligence collection operations, and that’s a very worrying trend if it is happening” [63]

8. Chinese investment constraints and the eroding Australian home ownership dream. Australia via the Treasurer and the Foreign Investment Review Board can veto foreign investment in particular areas “in the national interest”. Thus a Chinese bid for the huge Kidman Company rural empire (on stolen and ethnically cleansed Aboriginal land) was vetoed on this basis as was the Singapore Stock Exchange’s attempted merger with the Australian ASX [64]. In contrast, the Americans, who have an increasing military presence in northern Australia, were upset over the granting of a 99 year lease to the Chinese company Landbridge – The Age newspaper reports: “Former Australian trade minister Andrew Robb walked straight out of Parliament last year and into an $880,000-a-year job with a billionaire closely aligned to the Chinese Communist Party and its key trade policy. As part of the "confidential" consultancy deal, Mr Robb, the architect of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, began consulting to Ye Cheng the day before the July 2 federal election last year… Mr Ye is the owner of Landbridge, which controversially acquired the 99-year lease for the Port of Darwin in 2015. He is also a member of the national Chinese People's Consultative Committee” [65].

There has been massive Chinese investment in Australian housing and this has coincided with a big decrease in home affordability and an erosion of the Australian dream of owning a home with a “backyard”. Australian law for decades has allowed so-called “negative gearing” whereby even moderately prosperous people in employment can invest in rentable property and write off expenses against their employment income, with generous capital gains provisions allowing for big profits on eventual sale of the property. The pro-One Percenter ruling Coalition supports retention of this licence for One Percenters and Ten Percenters to print money but the Labor Opposition has finally found the courage to propose restricting this scheme to new properties (thereby promoting building of new housing stock and constraining soaring house prices). The Coalition Government has acted to confine foreign investment in housing to new housing, thereby pandering to popular indignation over Chinese buying property and putting up house prices (however it appears that a way round this prohibition of foreign purchase of existing housing is for foreigners to become partners with an Australian home owner, demolish the house and then profitably build multi-storey apartments).

9. Draconian plans to limit Chinese influence in Australia at the expense of free speech and democracy. Two major news organizations (Fairfax and the taxpayer-funded ABC) have been legitimately exploring increasing Chinese Government influence in Australian institutions (e.g. businesses, media, universities, overseas students, political organizations) [65]. Concerns about increasing Chinese political influence (e.g. massive donations by Chinese companies to both the governing Coalition and the Labor Opposition) have led Labor to propose banning foreign donations to political parties. The successful Coalition (and likely US and Australian Intelligence) hounding of Senator Sam Dastyari as “too close” to the Chinese was weakly based on his receipt of about $7,000 for Labor work-related travel and legal expenses, his advocacy of a neutral position over the South China Sea and the extraordinary and false allegation that by telling a Chinese businessman to leave his mobile phone inside for a private conversation outside he was betraying an Australian Intelligence operation (the irony is that while Dastyari could truthfully claim to have not received and revealed classified information about an Australian Intelligence operation, those revealing this private conversation – the Coalition Government, media and very likely Australian Intelligence – have done exactly that, an offence punishable by 5 years and indeed possibly 10 years in prison) [4].

Having falsely blackened Senator Sam Dastyari as a traitor in an anti-Chinese witch hunt [61], the Coalition and Australian Intelligence evidently want to extend this to 10 further public figures [62]. Indeed the Coalition has again got journalists upset by advancing legislation that would greatly broaden what is deemed to be “secret”. Thus Peter Symonds of WSWS (December 2017): “Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday announced sweeping new anti-democratic laws that will expand the definitions of treason and espionage, criminalise “foreign political interference” and require anyone deemed to be “a foreign agent of influence” to be named on a national register. The new legislation is above all aimed at criminalising and suppressing anti-war opposition as Australia increasingly integrates into the US military build-up in Asia and its drive to war against North Korea and China. It is an attempt to create a political climate in which any questioning of Australian and US foreign policy and the drive to war is illegitimate. Yesterday’s announcement has been preceded by a hysterical media campaign over the past year against foreign, namely Chinese, influence - fed by the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and other security agencies. It reached fever pitch last week with lurid new allegations against Labor senator Sam Dastyari over his relations with Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo… The United States has a long history of direct interference in Australian politics - including in the ousting of two prime ministers, Gough Whitlam in 1975 and Kevin Rudd in 2010” [66].

Of course Australia should protect itself from espionage and foreign interference impacting Australian democracy but the problem is where to draw the line between “classified information” and the people’s fundamental right to know. The Lib-Labs (Coalition Government and Labor Opposition) have chosen to concentrate on inevitably increasing Chinese influence while ignoring the massive American and Zionist subversion of Australian organizations, institutions, academics, politicians, parties and media. Now Australia is formally allied with the US via the ANZUS Treaty but should have drawn the line when the US backed the overthrow of the Whitlam Government in 1975, backed the removal of Labor PM Rudd in 2010 and directly intervened against Labor in the 2004 elections over Labor leader Mark Latham’s anti-Iraq War stance. The extreme right-wing US Murdoch media empire has 70% of major newspaper readership in Australia. Indeed the Trump presidency has provided a pressure valve for Australian presstitutes who are bound by “all the way with the USA” but are allowed to follow pro-Democrat US media in lambasting Trump buffoonery.

The Labor Opposition has been successfully “wedged” over intelligence and US Alliance issues and is too frightened to make dissenting noises. While Australian journalists face up to 10 years in prison for revealing illegal Australian Intelligence operations (and very likely soon for revealing things connectable to Australian Intelligence) , massive intelligence data about Australians is shared by Australian Intelligence with its 5-eyes partners (UK, US, Canada and New Zealand) in the knowledge that the US then shares such intelligence with Apartheid Israel, a nuclear terrorist rogue state that is not a member of the 5-eyes, is not a formal ally of Australia, and has an appalling record of subversion, perversion and violation of Australians [67]. Australia has shocking, Nazi-style, free speech-restricting laws. The 2012 Australia-United States Defence Trade Cooperation Treaty-related Defence Trade Controls Bill makes it an offence punishable by 10 years in prison for an academic without a permit to inform non-Australians (in conversation, tutorials, lectures, conference papers, scientific papers etc) about numerous technologies and thousands of chemicals and organisms listed in a presently 353-page Defence and Strategic Goods List [68, 69]. Australians face 5 years in prison for revealing the arrest without charge of a spouse, and 5-10 years for revealing illegal Australian Intelligence operations, with the looming prospect of draconian punishment for publishing a broad range of things Australian Intelligence wants to keep secret [67, 70].

10. Pro-Zionist, US lackey Australia’s Sinophobia re terra nullius South China Sea versus densely populated, Zionist-occupied Palestine. The South China Sea is called thus because it is off the coast of South China – it is not off the coast of Australia or California. China’s “island building” on uninhabited atolls in the South China Sea is understandable in terms of the worsening US threat to China and sea lanes carrying China’s huge trade with the world. Indeed outstanding Australian expatriate writer John Pilger has warned of an impending US war on China [71, 72], stating: “American bases form a giant noose encircling China with missiles, bombers, warships - all the way from Australia through the Pacific to Asia and beyond,"… China is surrounded by 400 US military bases; US naval forces are on the doorstep of China. US missiles are pointed at China from Okinawa and southern Korea. There are no Chinese naval ships and no Chinese bases off California; there is no demonstrable Chinese military threat to the US, though China has made significant defensive preparations since Obama's aggressive "pivot” in Asia that crucially involved Australia [72]. The US now has approximately 800 formal military bases in 172 countries around the world, and the US threat to China and the Chinese economy is very real [73]. The Chinese activities in the South China Sea have been legitimately criticized by other stakeholders (Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines) but the US and its lackey Australian Deputy Sheriff in Asia have been particularly strident and confrontational.

In stark contrast, the US and US lackey Australia rank first and second, respectively, as supporters of nuclear terrorist, racist Zionist run, genocidally racist, and mendacity-, racism- , theft- and genocide-based democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel that for 50 years has been brutally occupying the densely populated Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Occupied Palestinians (presently 5 million and together with 1.8 million Palestinian Israelis constituting half of the subjects of Apartheid Israel) are denied all human rights, and their land is still being remorselessly stolen and cleared to create Israeli towns on stolen and ethnically cleansed land [74-79].

Final comments.

White Australia has had a nasty record of Sinophobia from persecution of Chinese gold miners (involving exclusion, deportations and violent riots), exclusion from jobs and unions, exclusion from immigration via the White Australia Policy, war against Chinese in the Boxer Rebellion and the Korean War. Labor PM Whitlam’s recognition of China led to 45 years of rapprochement with China that has now been interrupted with present Australian support for Trump America’s anti-Chinese policies. White Australia’s role as America’s loyal Deputy Sheriff in East Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific was always absurd and intrinsically racist. However China is now Australia’s biggest trading partner as well as being of major importance to the Developing World - craven US lackey Australia’s anti-China stance endangers this relationship. Australia must listen to wise counsel from numerous eminent Australians demanding an Australian-centred approach to the issue of China trade versus the US Alliance. The racist, warmongering, human rights-violating buffoonery of Trump has crystallized the urgent need for Australia to start distancing itself from a violent, racist and planet-threatening America. Australia must declare independence from Zionist-subverted, nuclear terrorist, endlessly war-making, planet-threatening and Australia-violating America and rely on the UN, International Law and, yes, China and India for its security and independence.
